The terms seem to be interchangeable these days. I just heard Loyalist used on a radio chat show (not a dingbat one) in references to the two main pro-UK parties in NI, one of which shares government with Sinn Fein. Part of the success of the accords is that the concept of Union per se seems to have lost currency except among diehards. As the radio interviewee remarked, he walks around Belfast with sterling in one pocket and euros in the other. We'll see if things revert now, though.
