FORD = Fix Or Repair Daily.

Ta, Robyn. Let's see what my Union can get from my notoriously tight-fisted employer. Solidarity forever.

Those noted union-busters, Henry Ford, and the head of his "Service Department," Harry Bennett, must be spinning in their graves.

To their limited credit, when Michael Moore did a movie where he challenged GM bigshots to change the oil on one of their cars or trucks, the CEO of Ford took Moore up.

On-camera, wearing the union jacket he'd been given after the contract-signing, the Ford bigshot (I forget his name), sauntered into a factory garage, slid under a gleaming Ford Bronco, and changed the oil with great dexterity.

After the oil change, he talked up the Bronco and Ford's role as an employer with some skill, giving the company line. I admit, I was impressed. Given that Ford had donated to Jewish charities in the last 70 years and invested in Israel as well, I was impressed.

Moore asked, "At Ford, you say 'Quality is Job One. What's Job Two?'"

The Ford guy puzzled over that for a bit, and answered, "We don't think about that."

In 1947, Henry Ford viewed US Army and British Royal Army Signal Corps footage of the liberated Nazi concentration camps, seeing for himself what the results of Hitler's -- and his -- anti-Semitic rhetoric had actually amounted to.

Ford, a lifelong pacifist, was so horrified and stunned by what he saw and his lifelong stupidity and racism, he suffered the first of the series of strokes that killed him a year later.

Karmic justice, I guess.

Wonderful news! I hope that Stellantis and GM will begin working with the union as well.

So Republican plans to destroy the Democrats in Michigan by hating on the UAW will be not so much?

The workers getting an immediate 85% raise are probably doing backflips right now!

Yeah, that one got me. I audibly guffawed when I read it.

But seriously, I can't think of a time in my life when an 85% raise would have been anything less than incredible news.

OK Ford, please just make a car that is in the ballpark of being decent and I will buy it over the non-union brands, but you gotta meet me halfway.

I'm a truck guy. I like my F150 a lot. It's a tool, and a good one. So were the Dodges I had most recently. Used to be the Big 3 were the only makers of full-sized trucks, and I'll stick with them. Until someone brings to market a midsized electric truck, that is. I've reserved an Alpha Wolf, but I may die waiting for it.

Rivian R1T

I don't have Rivian money. Honestly, I probably don't have Alpha Wolf money, either. The thing I like about the Wolf is that they're the only ones that say they're building a standard cab truck. I refuse to buy a 4-door. It's visceral. I hate them, and I hate that the manufacturers insist they're only giving us what we want. No, they're "giving" us what makes them the most money, and they have for years.

Oh wait.

My daughter's 2022 Maverick is awesome.

used to have a Ranger a late 80's Ranger and it was great too and I'll admit the Maverick does look good.

She got clocked doing 83 in a 70. Trooper was pretty decent about it, gave her a ticket and said, "Nice truck. How's the gas mileage?"

She bought the Maverick to replace her 2000 Ranger! :)

I just want a decent, smallish car. Not an SUV or a truck. American manufacturers don't really make regular cars anymore, you have to want a Canyonero

Capitalism doesn't really work very well without robust unions. And a party or parties that offer robust support, and are ideologically close. It's a tragedy that it's taken decades to relearn this basic lesson in the US. Could have just looked at W. Europe, Australia, Canada.
