"As many have pointed out, electric trucks are ideally suited for the frequent stops and starts of mail delivery. When they’re “idling” while a mail carrier goes up the walk to a mailbox at someone’s house, they don’t use any electricity except for accessories like air conditioning (the old rattletraps being replaced don’t even have AC)."

There is a large expense that is not receiving any notice, replacing starters since postal regulations require deliverypeople to shut of the engine ***every time they get out of the truck***. Think about how many times you start your engines in a day then imagine how many times a day a postal truck starts. I live on a cul-de-sac of fourteen homes as duplexes. There are seven separate mailbox couplets, all out of reach from the road. That's seven starts within a very small portion of their delivery route, and usually within 20 minutes.

"> "A brand-new starter can range from $80 to over $350. For a qualified mechanic to replace or rebuild your starter, you can expect to pay between $150 and over $1,100." https://www.autozone.com/diy/starter/starter-replacement-cost

Starters? How about brakes! An electric could use regenerative and electromagnetic braking to recharge the batteries and mechanical brake as backup.

This sucks so badly. Isn't the USPS run by a board? Is there no recourse? Mean-spirited plus inefficient and expensive as hell. Can someone sue?

“ They’ll just blame the inevitable factory closings on Democrats anyway.”

You know, at some point, red state voters have to finally make the connection that republicans always fuck then over.

They have to, right?

"Finally, there’s also the slim chance that Republicans just won’t be able to pass the Big Bumptious Buffoonery Bill at all, thanks to the terrible Medicaid cuts and other crap in it, so we can always hope for that."

It's already clear that whatever version passes the Senate, the OBBB will have to go back to the House, where the chances if it passing seem even slimmer than they were when they first passed their version weeks ago.

Of course, I'm pretty sure that it will be impossible for Congress to meet FFOTUSs "demand" that they have a bill for him to sign by the Fourth of July ( I've already seen "analysis pieces" that talk about the House staying in session over the holiday ). So, that'll be a black eye for FFOTUS, and more evidence that lawmakers don't have to be afraid of him.

As they say, "Hope springs eternal", so I guess I'm grasping at any hope I can find.

Let's talk about the evidence-based factual truth of how long it takes US Mail to reach staff members in Congress.

Some peacock's been preening in the chat, showing a 2008 GAO letter to Congress that mail is delivered to Capitol Hill in five or fewer days. While, yes, that is what the George W. Bush-era letter says, there are two salient points to remember:

• It is 2025 -- that's 17 years and five administrations later

• IT'S 2025

Here is more up-to-date information -- it all says that NGOs expect that when their supporters write members of Congress it will take a MONTH for the mail to reach congressional staffers.

Why RIGHT NOW the Congressional Management Foundation's guidance to its member congressional staffers is to expect letters to Congress to take *at least* 3 weeks to arrive on Capitol Hill, and *four weeks* for congressional staffs to process (ie, read, digest, consider, respond) to that message. Again, that's not 2008 information, as is being bandied about by people claiming some affinity for quality factual info. That's TODAY.

So, please please please do mail your members of Congress. Just expect that when your envelope goes into the box today, don't expect it to be received in Washington before two weeks *after* the Republican masters of Congress plan to have voted on a final, conference version of the bill in question.

And it's one of the governmental functions outlined in the constitution. (Nowhere in the constitution is the Post Office required to turn a profit either, the founders expected it would cost money to operate.)
