Worst confession you will hear today: I have family in SA and also in Zimbabwe. The family in Zimbabwe really are white farmers and really felt threatened by locals who wanted to take their land. Some moved to SA, some to Australia. After a few years about half of them decided to return to Zimbabwe because they missed its beauty so much. None, so far as I know, have been murdered. There's probably a lesson there, but I haven't figured out what it is yet. Maybe that the white people in Africa belong there as much as the white people in the US? That's better than thinking England should set up camps for white Americans in Boston and Virginia to help them prepare to move back to Manchester...
I was very briefly in South Africa - as a barely teen in 1971. My parents were concerned about worsening economic conditions in the UK, and as my mother's brother lived in South Africa, they decided we would go to visit and maybe settle there.
It was like stepping back into the 50s. White girls in shirtwaister dresses with hats and white gloves. There was no television. My uncle was opposed to apartheid and had a small illegal printing press in the garage (they were later kicked out of the country). I remember my aunt saying her colored housekeeper was a very good worker who deserved more pay, but the law limited her wages, so my aunt could only give her clothes and groceries for her family. My older cousin talked about the compulsory military service he would have to do before he could go to college, and whether he should leave the country to avoid it.
The crowning absurdity was brought home when we visited a restaurant (I think it was a burger place? possibly a Wendyburger, but don't quote me. It was divided into two parts by a rail, whites on one side, with the tables well spread out and table napkins. The side for blacks and coloreds was more crowded and rather dirtier. But what will always stick in my mind was -
It was the same black chef who was cooking all of our meals!!! And the same Indian waitress who brought us all our meals!!! We were incredulous at the sheer hypocrisy of it.
Driving back to my uncle's place, my younger sister, a cute little 8 year old with blond curls, was very quiet and seemed to be thinking hard. Just before her bedtime, she suddenly announced, "I don't think the white people really think the black and brown people are stupid. I think they just want to pay them less money."
Next day my parents told us we would be going to New Zealand instead, for which I am eternally grateful. My little sister, BTW, went on to spend many years doing humanitarian work.
Having read this over, I am now feeling uncomfortably aware the Aotearoa New Zealand once was inhabited by te Maori, until the pakeha (white people - of whom I am one) essentially stole their land and decimated the population by war and disease. Now the pakeha are in the majority and overall better off than te Maori, and English is the main language. I regret I was unaware of te Maori viewpoint until I gained a partner of biracial descent and started learning the language. So now I think I should not be quick to point a finger at the white South Africans. Their real offense seems to be that their blatant racism continued until much more recently, and they remained a minority of the population. It is far more easy and convenient to forget how I, as a pakeha, have benefitted from the exploitation of te Maori, and my culture is now the dominant one. Some reparations and restoration of land have been made, but I sometimes remember to ask myself how I would feel if my late partner's iwi (tribe) were to ask for the land which my house is on.
I feel it is - yes, that fatal phrase - white liberal guilt which makes me so ready to denounce the colonists of the past, and their descendants in other places today. ie I'm a hypocrite too.
The only white South African I've ever known was the captain of the boat on which I learned to sail. He loved Black people (which was a plus, considering we were sailing the waters of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and there aren't many white people there).
