After the Civil War, a lot of folks don't know that the US federal government did actually give out reparations.

The kicker is that they went to the White slaveowners.

There's a school of thought that the Oklahamo farmers were the ones actually responsible for the "Dust Bowl" and the 1930s disaster, because they endlessly overplanted and refused to take reasonable measures to preserve the farmland.

I don't think this guy knows much about which he speaks.

It took the Feds years to make them understand soil conservation.

We’re seeing it happen again. After the “dirty 30s” shelter belts of trees were planted to prevent wind erosion here of the upper Great Plains.

Over the past 10-15 years, farmers have been taking down the shelter belts, to squeeze just that much more land into production. And guess what’s happening? Yep, the land is getting drier, and the topsoil is in the air on windy days. We have to watch our air quality! There are additional factors - farmers no longer pick rocks from the field but roll over them, pushing them further down and pulverizing the topsoil to dust.

Farmers enjoy a lot of respect and gratitude, an entire romanticized mythos built up around those that “feed the world”. But make no mistake, it’s their own bottom line that they consider first. They also take a LOT of government (our) money, tax breaks, a work force that is exempt from most workers safety and wage guidelines, etc.

All the farm handouts, while voting almost exclusively Republican. Good for me but not for thee.

I never understood how the entire federal government can willingly be shut down by one redneck biblethumping hayseed in rural Wisconsin. USDA should go ahead and mail the checks, and tell the judge to pound sand.

Actually fact check true. USDA advised farmers to plow straight as an arrow rows and as much land as they could plow every spring. When the wind really kicked up it would funnel through all those arrow straight rows; there was no natural impediment to slow it down. And thus the Dust Bowl was born.

What a crock of manure.

Well, Democrats follow the rule of law (to mail the checks would violate the law)

Republicans don't give a shit about the law, and the current AG is letting criminals run rampant with no consequences.

So there is no law. Not really.

The current AG was the first pick of Orrin Hatch and Strom Thurmond for Supreme Court. When the Republicans said they would block anyone that Obama presented he threw their own first choice in their faces, it was about the only time I liked the guy. Now Biden makes him AG?
