...so any comments that exploit Otieno's death as a means of ranting about Black activists will be deleted. I've had enough.

???

I had enough just reading that description.

Some agencies already have that policy. The trouble is the cops don't follow it. My cousin, a white kid BTW, was murdered by Garden Grove, CA cops. He had mental problems and there was a standing order that when his mother called for help someone trained in handling mental health situations should go with the cops. They didn't do this. Instead the assholes gunned him down. He was standing at the top of the stairs holding a Swiss Army Knife with a 2" blade. They were at the bottom of the stairs and just opened fire on him. Of course the fuckers got away with it.

Police continue to fall flat on their face when it comes to respecting an individuals rights and as a parent of a child with a mental health disability, I find it horrifying that there is no demonstratable evidence that enforcement has any fucking clue as how to deal with those that are most vulnerable because most everybody is a perp to them.

They're trained to.

A certain amount of police training is contracted out to companies who do this sort of thing, and some of them are horrendous.

All other professional licensing is subject to what is called "reciprocity" If t you've lost your license in one State you can't get it in another.

As do insurance agents and real estate people. If you fuck up in one State it's reported to a national data base,

It's called "Professional Licensing". Just the same as Barbers, Beauticians. Insurance and Real Estate Agents have to go through Even Manicurists As an Insurance Agent I must complete 24 hrs of continuing education every two years and pass a test to renew my license. fukking cops don't have to do shit

All other professional occupations are controlled through professi0onal licensing. Including Barbers, Beauticians, Real Estate Agents, and Insurance Producer. So why not Police Officers?. Apparently we are more concerned that you might get a bad hair style or insurance policy than we are with you being bludgeoned to death or shot during a traffic stop

The "Militarization of Civilian Police Forces in the United States"

It used to be that if you got pulled over you were confronted by a usually friendly peace officer. He was wearing a police uniform, you know one of those stiff brimmed hats, stiped trousers, a uniform shirt maybe with a badge on it. You'd get a ticket, maybe if you were lucky a warning. It was a not a too unpleasant experience and you were told to "drive safely' given a wave and a smile. Now, all too frequently you are encountering a "soldier" in full battle garb, body armor and multiple "weapons systems", who now views you not as a citizen who has committed some minor infraction, but rather as "the enemy" Don't make any sudden moves!

BTW, "CBS News Washington" is in "Little Washington" (as we call it) in Beaufort county, NC, if anyone was wondering why a DC local news station would be covering an NC story (which is to say, one isn't).

I do like the idea of requiring continuing education. My friend has to get continuing medical education and she isn't even fully compensated for it.

He didn't need restraints because *I* felt they were necessary. He needed restraints so he didn't injure himself further. A broken hip is no laughing matter. Also, it is not my job as the family member to make sure that the patient does not injure themselves even more while in the hospital awaiting surgery ... it is the medical staff's responsibility.

The problem here is that hospitals are not set up to handle patients with dementia (or mental illness). They are set up to handle patients who can follow instructions. They can't put a member of staff in the room all day long to watch them, or feed them if they can't feed themselves.

The problem wasn't that I had to sit in the room with my father for days, the problem was that he was 6'2" tall, weighed 220 pounds, and I was not physically able to restrain him myself. On one occasion I even had to lay across him in the bed to keep him from getting up. That is outside the scope of family member responsibilities. It might also be outside the scope of medical staff responsibilities. Wrist restraints were actually the humane solution in this case to prevent him from further injuring himself.

Snow. Birches. Moon so bright the sky is almost blue and you can read sheet music by its light.Playing flute and freezing your fingers. Not getting arrested because no one is around to hear you and decide you're crazy.
