I never learned to drive. Part of the reason is that I live on the Monopoly-board-sized island of Manhattan, home to 24 hour/365 day public transportation. The other, bigger part is that I loathe internal combustion engines. When I learned to sail a boat, there were times I had to turn on the engine and drive the boat, rather than sail it. No wind.

13 or 14 years ago, however, when I visited my friends on The Rez to attend a sun dance, I couldn't spend the couple of days with them that I'd planned, because there would be no one available to drive me to Rapid City to fly home. I spent those two days instead in Rapid City. I used its public transportation (which runs till 6 p.m.) to visit the only vegan restaurant in town (run by Seventh Day Adventists, and attached to a health food store). I also found great food at an Italian place. What passed for a bagel was not.

I realized as I explored Rapid City that in this country, driving is a survival skill. The country's just too big, with too little mass transit infrastructure, for a non-driver. I've had a few lessons from friends. I'm checking online to find a driving instructor with a specialty in Oldz who've never learned; this city has everything and I'm sure I'll locate one. Now that cars are going electric like Dylan at the Newport Folk Festival, I have no excuse. Yes, I realize that electric cars will soon be able to drive themselves, but I also believe that a human who can take over in an emergency will remain a necessity, at least initially. Who ever thought that Volvo would be cool?

Definitely throwing down in that market, which has been pretty much all Tesla's domain.

i have a small truck i'm thinking of converting to electric hybrid, like diesel/electric trains. an electric motor to move the truck, and a generator powered by a small engine making power. it is the future.

It’s unclear how the American auto market will respond to Volvo’s move...

someone rolls coal on my old Volvo and they'll learn just how much tougher that old Volvo is built than their new "heavy duty" pikkemup.

[ totally my fault (mitigated) but it once rolled into a parked car and did well over $1000 worth of damage to it . . . the Volvo had a small scratch in the paint! ]

That's basically how a Prius works, except that there's also a magical mechanism to couple the gas engine directly to the drivetrain. So when you really punch it, you get both the batteries and the engine working - it accelerates surprisingly well.
