I see an either or scenario on those independent numbers.
One is it’s easy to say you are independent so the Republicans you voted for are not your fault, so you get the same astroturfing without any of that pesky blame.
The other is they don’t want anyone to know they have finally seen the end game of the GOP, and they are horrified, This still doesn’t mean they want anyone to know they voted for Democrats. Perish the thought!

Up here, we have a paper ballot that is scanned electronically. So at the very least, there is a paper trail for recounts.
