Wonkparty Weekend! A refresher on the when and wheres of all the excitement here: https://open.substack.com/pub/martiniambassador/p/wonkparty-weekend

Yeah, I was coming off vacation tiredness when I did the gif. It’s LABOR Day, not Memorial Day. Sheesh.

Have a wonderful Labor Day friends, however you choose to spend it.

ETA, a quick note from host Paul about the temperatures for the Berkshires gig:

Good Morning Campers!!

It was 43 degrees when I got up around 6 and has shot up to 44F now so bring your cold weather rated sleeping bag if you're camping. Daytime highs are forecast for the 70's and maybe even the low 80's, but the nights up here can be a tad brisk. Sunny and bright forecast for the entire Wonkapalooza.

ETA...Ziggy informed me that it was "cold" sleeping out in her new 30 degree bag, so that's their opinion but please keep in mind that our Zig is a flatlander. I'm out on the deck, smoking a butt, wearing a terry cloth bathrobe and I'm comfortable, but I'm used to it.

Perhaps ask Zig once they get on here, for a different perspective.

A "flatlander" ! Ha ! Haven't heard that in decades when we used to visit my Mountain Man uncle up in Gold Country. If ya needed something blowed up, he always had a little dynamite around. Blew things up for the Navy in WW II.

You guys have fun.

FYI Our state flag is a bear.

I have never NOT been cold in a 30-degree sleeping bag. I don't know what the "30-degree" rating is supposed to measure, but I'm increasingly convinced it's the temperature at which one dies of hypothermia inside one of those bags.

Expand full comment

My experience is that a 30 degree bag will keep you from freezing to death at 30 degrees. No way will you be comfortable, but not dead.

Personally, I look for a bag that is rated for AT LEAST 10 degrees below the temperature you'll be experiencing.

15 degree differenceis better for me, personally, but at 30 degrees, I'll be nice and comfy in my 15 degree bag.

Expand full comment

The rating is external temp at which the back should still keep you at your body temp. So if you're cold at 44 degrees in a bag rated for 30 degrees, you might be a lizard- not that there's anything wrong with that! Cold blooded things are our friends too! You'll need to travel with a heat lamp, puppy, or warm blooded companion, though.

Flatlander? I live in The Heights! 😁

The NIGHT was fucking cold to sleep in, 2 pairs of socks and a hoodie to stay warm under that excellent sleeping bag. 🥶

Thanks Suzie, I survived. It's my PTSD, I have a problem with hyper-vigilance and once I'm there I freak out and think everything is trying to kill me. I took a Xanax, talked to you guys to bring me back down to earth and made it through the night. I've organized my tent, know what to expect and tonight will be much better. sorry for being so grumpy last night.

In the Sierras here, the bears are more scared of you than you of them.

No help? Sorry. Have lots of fun!

No problem at all, travel days are often bumpy for me, so I totally get it. Xanax is there to be taken as needed, so it's great you have that in the toolbox . Now you're sorted and in it to win it! It will be great weather. It is with great joy I think of their cabin and you being there is picture perfect in my mind.

Reading you loud and clear, brother.

I know, bring your book. And thanks for the loan. It is all around fascinating.

I reminded you twice about the book only because, like me, you sometimes forget things. Like tents. :)

Thanks

LOL! I forgot my tent! I have Zyx to remind me now.

When you folks arriving?

I stopped at the Cummington Creamery Co-op a few days ago and noticed they had a cooler full of vegan food. The store is one town over, and you might even see Ms. Maddow there, since she and Susan live in that town.

Just want to on the record as never wanting ever to own any trendy thing, whether decor as ridiculous as kitchens that hide their sinks or huge closets for my shoe collection, or clothing styles (OK I will admit to being grunge before grunge was "in").

I think I am repulsed by this stuff since I made the mistake last night of looking at celebritys' houses they are having trouble unloading.

In the Dr. Zhivago movie when he finally returned home to find his house now was lived in by like 50 people, I agreed with him "This was more just". Too many people have too damn much money. Way too many people are in the working poor, unhoused, etc. categories

Note, the first:

>> Nebraska governor signs anti-trans “women’s bill of rights.” <<

Note, the second:

>> a federal class action gender discrimination lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York on behalf of five female current and former Vassar College professors alleging systemic pay disparities and an ongoing pattern of pay discrimination, with 36 additional female full professors writing jointly to say that they share the class representatives’ grievances about Vassar’s pattern of pay discrimination. The case challenges pervasive and long-standing gender-based pay disparities between Vassar’s male and female full professors. <<

The execs making the pay decisions are all trans, I am sure, just like all the priests raping adult and child parishioners are secretly drag queens. That's just how it works, people. I don't make the laws.

I'm still listening to HRC's book Hard Choices. She's currently at the massive 2010 earthquake in Haiti. I really think we have missed the boat with Haiti. It could be a friendly paradise, except for US racism and bullshit. And the French fucked it up also.

Just before this she talked about the Arab Spring revolts and how Putin/Russia fucked over getting Bashar al-Assad out.
