OT, but in about an hour I have my first in-person court hearing since January of 2020. I am almost more nervous than I was for my first ever hearing--at least that time if I messed up I could blame it on lack of experience. Now, though, everything's different, but I haven't had anyone who has told me how it's different.
Last week, during our last session of my White Backlash graduate course, my students asked me if I thought the U.S. would descend into a civil war during the next decade. I replied that the current situation is much more bleak than that. Here's why: 1) Nearly a year later, the state has still failed to meaningfully punish those who carried out the deadly 1/6 assault on the Capitol, much less punish its organizers in Trump, Bannon, Guiliani, Christopher Miller, Josh Hawley, etc.
You just reminded me--on top of everything else, I REALLY need to figure out my student loan situation--it's been so very nice not having to worry about it for the past however months!
Putin wants to rebuild the empire of Catherine the great. The US, obviously, does not want this. Putin has been testing the waters by using salami tactics (seizing land slice by slice) in Georgia and Crimea. Since the west did absolutely nothing in those cases, he feels confident in his invasion of Ukraine. The invasion will happen. Russia has already instigated separatist fighting in southern Ukraine in order to draw military away from the Russian border.
President Biden made it unequivocally clear to Vlad that America and other NATO nations would impose crippling economic sanction on Russia if he invaded Ukraine.
The only way to get through to Putin is to grab him by the rubles and squeeze hard.

Concern trolls have been awakened.
They were dead, to begin with.
Yes, but Biden had a 2-hr. conversation with Putin earlier today. Which is what was being discussed when we joined the presser, already in progress.
