During both of her campaigns for the Senate, Bill helped out but always resolutely stayed out of her spotlight. She was very much in charge both times. And during her tenure as a Senator we never heard from him at all. During both of her campaigns Hillary Clinton did something that no Democrat had done in generations: she won the upstate vote. In fact, she totally dominated in the upstate region. She even kicked ass in the rural counties, which was completely unprecedented for a Democrat. She did so because she reached out to people all across the region, met with them and really listened to their concerns. In the past Democratic candidates had relied on the NYC vote to win elections but Hillary pursued a campaign to win everyone's vote, including those in some of the most solid and steadfast Republican counties in NY state. And she succeeded!

She began the process that resulted in my very red district (which had never elected a Democrat in its more than 150 year history) turning blue. She was the first Democrat to truly break through here; people in this region really liked her and they still do.

And she didn't forget about us once she was elected, either. In many ways she did more for the upstate region as a Senator than she did for the metro region; she was as much "our" Senator as the was theirs, a feat that no politician from any party had ever pulled off in New York in anyone's memory. I think that Hillary Clinton would be incredibly great as President of the United States.

During the 2008 primary campaign, more people cast votes directly for Hillary Clinton than Americans have ever specifically cast for any other woman candidate in the history of this country. Way more. In contrast to either Geraldine Ferraro or Sarah Palin, she wasn't running alongside a man who occupied the top of the ticket; she ran alone, campaigning as a candidate entirely in her own right. Millions upon millions of people nationwide voted for her. Think about all that for a minute or two.

She came very close to winning it, and millions upon millions of people all around the country voted for her. So she couldn't have been that far off the last time.

Although he helped out in 2000 and 2006, Bill was never a big player in either one of Hillary's two campaigns for the Senate, and he had no perceptible influence during her time as a Senator. He may feel some vindication as a result of her political career, but those of us who voted in both Senate elections and again in the 2008 Democratic primary perceived Hillary as very much her own candidate with her own priorities, her own people, her own policy proposals, her own style and her own way of relating to her constituency. When she campaigned and when she served we did not get hit all the time with echoes of the Bill Clinton Presidency. That took me quite by surprise in 2000; I was totally expecting it, but it never emerged. People didn't see her as Bill Clinton Redux, but rather as an entirely new force who was running for political office. The main thing that she derived from the Bill Clinton Presidency was name recognition. Everything else she obtained on her own or came directly from her.

To those of us who she directly represented for 8 years during the previous decade, she always seemed to be totally in charge of her own political career. She was a very smart, very articulate and very capable leader when she served in the Senate. Yes, she had some missteps in 2008, as did all of the candidates, including the eventual winner. One would be quite obtuse to think that she has not learned anything from that experience.

I'm not in favor of family dynasties so far as the presidency is concerned but if I can't have Elizabeth Warren I'll take Hillary.

I agree! Sec. Clinton was a different creature entirely from Candidate Clinton, and FLOTUS Clinton. I didn't think she was ready in 2008, but now. . . . Who knows?

This time step aside in a timely manner when a better candidate gets traction, and try to be gracious about it.
