Republican nominee for governor of Virginia Ed Gillespie released a campaign ad earlier this week aiming to stoke fear in the cul-de-sacked bedroom communities of Northern Virginia. Because Democratic nominee Ralph Northam voted against a measure in the General Assembly which would have prevented localities from passing "sanctuary city" laws, the ad says, he would let MS-13 run wild through the streets and scenic byways of Virginia.
I'm not sure how that would be taken on the teevee, and the other team bent over bare assed...when someone does that to me I take it as more of an invitation than anything else.
I live about 10 miles from the neighborhood where MS13 started. let me explain who they are. most of them were refugees from the civil war in el salvador who came here as kids after witnessing some truly gruesome and PTSD inducing shit. the salvadoreans got shit on by the black and mexican gangs so they started a gang to defend themselves. many of them were arrested and deported back to el salvador where they ended up in jail and learned tactics from the rest of the kids that grew up in a war zone and were completely desensitized to all the insane violence around them and from the colombian/mexican drug cartels that hired them to do security for them. Then they came back to LA and got a reputation for being brutal and for tattooing their faces. that made them super scary for magazines like Time and Newsweek to write stories about and for an upstart network called fox to talk about how they were insane killing machines that were taking over our country (even though they really only controlled a few square miles of territory in LA). of course once those magazines hit the stands, every kid with brown skin in middle america that wanted to be a badass started calling themselves MS13, even though they weren't actually affiliated with the real gang at all and most of the time weren't even salvadoreans. as gangs increasingly became irrelevant and crime kept going down, people stopped talking about MS13 here in LA, but then all the sudden trump and his ilk needed a boogie man to scare people into building his wall, so here they are again.
It is almost as if we had some sort of intervention program in place to help people instead of letting them play with boot straps, we could avoid this sort of thing.
But that would be socialism!!!! And think how many nuns and farmers we had to slaughter in Central America to keep that from happening to them in the 80s. We sure can't let it happen here

A sanctuary city protects illegal immigrants. Which is an issue onto itself I know we disagree on. I think if you want to defend sanctuary cities, MS13 probably isn't your best avenue.
While I don't support sanctuary cities, I do have an appreciation for limited federal government. Therefore, I don't really care if another state (such as Virginia) has sanctuary cities or not.
Virginia has a problem with MS13. My issue is with reducing peoples concerns about it to white-bigotry against people of color. It was commented above and I agree with it that its more often minorities who feel the brunt of gang violence in their communities. *Could it be, despite being white, despite being republican, that the minorities in those communities want someone who will do something about gang violence?
