It always struck me as weird we did not have a holiday to commentate the Union victory in the Civil War and the end of Slavery! Juneteenth is a beautiful twofer!

We got a department-wide e-mail at 2:30 today that my office (along with all the other county offices) will be closed tomorrow.

I have a question, though. I need to get to the Post Office and local library. Which day will they be open?

I don't see a problem with moving the celebration from 4th of July to Juneteenth. If we consider the celebration to be a 'Freedom Day' celebration where July 4 was freedom from the British rule, then Juneteenth is a more recent event which was a significant milestone in achieving the freedom that we claim to be our national ethos and it makes sense to celebrate the most recent.

At some point there will be another date when we as a nation have made a significant step forward and then we can celebrate Freedom Day on that date. It does not diminish the significance of of either 4th of July or Juneteenth.

Well, my birthday isn't a federal holiday, but that doesn't stop people from dressing in green and getting stupidly drunk on green beer on my birthday.

I have friend who's birthday is Dec 25 so it is a federal holiday. However it is not all skittles and beer. He pointed out that as a kid that he got all his presents on one day per year so there was no opportunity for presents to adjust to changes in what he liked during the year and he didn't get as much in total as his siblings.

This Juneteenth federal holiday really snuck up on me. What's next, making election day a national holiday? I approve.

If we had universal vote by mail, we wouldn’t need a day off to go vote

Oh, that's why I got weepy! Admittedly, the sight of legislative/Cabinet groups undominated by white males makes me emotional.
