You know what would be useful? A trustworthy media that could investigate the issues and let us know the facts of the matter without sensationalizing them for ratings.

Too bad the media has sold its reputation for ratings.

Rape should be treated as attempted murder, or carry some acknowledgement about what that crime does to its victim, though. When an estimated 15% of its survivors commit suicide within 24 months of the act because they can't live with the PTSD by day and the nightmares by night, meet "penetration" doesn't begin to describe the damage. (Numbers from an old FBI estimate in the 80s. I had a reason to care about that, back then.)

No one is asking you to apologize. I'm asking you not to gloat over your good luck.

People definitely make choices that affect them, including kids. They make dumb fucking choices sometimes! But also, sometimes they're limited in the choices they can make by p-o-v-e-r-t-y. Free abortions are not available, generally, and a fuckton of people have to travel and lodge for their abortions- and thanks to restrictive new laws, they have to have multiple appointments over days or weeks to "make sure". Just getting mugged or losing a $20 out of your pocket could be the difference between being child-free and a new mom. I'd expect you to understand this: poverty is being at the whim of fate, powerlessness due to lack of resources. It is terrifying and stressful.

Birth control fails, and forced pregnancies are real. (AKA, "my abusive boyfriend throws my pills away and keeps having sex with me without a condom to knock me up.") Also, you were a smart, logical 16-year-old. Teens are not known for being forward-thinking. At this home for teen moms, it made me furious and sad that a bunch of fathers(almost all of whom were over 20) assured their girlfriends, "I'll be there for you, I'll support you and our baby, I love you, girl!", just long enough for her to be unable to get an abortion... then bam, he is off to another dimension. Not all dudes are like that, but adult men who knock up minors... might be. But it's not unreasonable for an inexperienced girl to make the decision to keep the kid based on one set of factors, only to be railroaded into a whole new world of shit.

Don't make assumptions about me. It's painfully stupid on your part. Wonkette does not think alike, which I'd expect you to know by now. But I think most of us do like people to have a little empathy for people in different situations. It's not about you.

but this is america!!!!! here we worship our celebrities as if they were gods and then every once in a while, we crucify a few of them to absolve us of all our sins. remember how we crucified paula deen and don imus and then there was no more racism? now that kevin spacey is banned from public life, the assistant manager at the walmart is definitely going to stop perving on the girl working the register in sporting goods.
