Same thing happened when my daughter got sick. The jerk did exactly what state here. Guess who didn't pay him. Then I called his office and told him straight out I wasn't paying him and he could kiss my backside to get payment. He threatened to sue me. I threatened new paper coverage of his tactics and going to the local TV station action line. Never heard from him again and dropped him as my family doc. Then other family members dropped him as well. Word of mouth had impact with friends of my family members.
Or the hospital literally charges different prices for different insurers, and different prices for procedures based on the patient's medical history and risk factors, and oh by the way it's an EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT so if you're concerned about that cost, try going to your PCP for the sniffles instead of an emergency room.
