The full quote[1] was "Good tits like to be cool; Great tits cope well with warming."

Parents who oppose these laws are remarkably silent.

Let them do activism and let them vote better.

If not, this is what they chose.

I'd love to!

Sure, but when Evangelicals talk about a "Christian Nation", they're thinking more Southern Baptists than "There's a Pope in Rome that can issue orders". Quite a few of them say that Catholics aren't actually Christians b/c they aren't Protestants (I've been told this before).

Tell them that we'd be going with Catholicism and they have fits.

First day of Grade 2, my daughter fished out her reading homework held between the tips of thumb and index finger, and said in a profoundly disgusted voice,"I have to read...this". So next day I asked the teacher if she could read her own books. The teacher ummed and ahhed, then asked what she was reading at home.

Beatrix Potter.

She was allowed to choose her own reading homework.

That's extremely sad. But it was resourceful of you to get whatever printed words you could find for reading practice.

This isn't about the parents. This is about the kids. And kids shouldn't be punished because their parents are assholes.

Expand full comment

Of course not. But if the parents are assholes then that is how the school board will act unless there is an overriding law that prohibits such conduct. In the setting of a SCOTUS that is intent on rolling back 14th Amendment protections that is increasingly unlikely.

However, my point was directed to the constant depiction of these radical Right groups as outsiders who take over school boards when, in fact, it is the local voters who let them do so and so are actually the ones responsible for the heinous results.

The teachers can insist that any cataloging of their current classroom books, in bulk, be done by other entities and not the teachers themselves, because they aren’t getting paid to do it. They can sit in boxes until they get addressed. And, in the meantime, they can submit their “lists” containing the same single book so it can get processed through the system of protocols they’ve been forced to comply with. If they wanna argue about tax dollars, then let them do so while the boxes sit, perhaps in locked closets on school property, or in school board offices. The single book submissions (which should be identical and submitted by each teacher simultaneously) could potentially be a great opportunity for publishers to sell books and get free publicity, if they donate the bulk supply for each one.

If they want to discuss wasted tax dollars and school property, force them to address paying teachers for the additional time they have to spend to adhere to this new censorship policy. Or, force them to come up with a better option for doing that cataloging, like a paid team that goes around to each school and systematically does it.

They haven’t adequately put into place the details for properly applying their sabotage, or one that addresses all the gray areas I’ve suggested we finesse to our benefit. I think the unified, single book, masse submissions approach will at least force them to do so, but making this more like we are submitting books in a way that emulates submissions for amending textbooks for curriculums (which is actually more accurate to what the opposition is aiming to tailor), will work. It will be troublesome enough to gum up their strategy and possibly even turn them off that approach.

Yep. I was beyond PISSED! I was working with the librarian that year and volunteering a couple of times a week there. They weren't content to not let their little shitters read it; they wanted NO ONE to read it.

Fuck these people. I'm so sick of them and am afraid we'll have to fight them again or they'll just steamroll us with this shit.
