Rereading Gibson’s Neuromancer. Daughter brought it over a few days ago, with a few other things she figured I might have use for. Flotsam from a house I no longer live in.

Forgot how damn good it was. Also I guess just in the mood.

Early evening/happy hour in a margarita place belongs to some people from El Salvador. They’ll make stuff with reposado isn’t on the menu that way if I ask. Friend soon flying out of town suggested it. Later I may visit the usual wine bar.

Took the day off, making it a very long weekend. Tomorrow I will make Wagyu ribeye for a kinda impromptu Thanksgiving thing with my children and someone at loose ends this year.

Wrote a song mostly to the end today, first that’s happened in a while. Promising so far I think.

'Trump’s New Press Secretary Says Abortion Pill Came From Nazi Germany'

"The 42-year-old was previously the senior communications adviser at Trump Media & Technology Group, the parent company of Truth Social; a frequent commentator on Fox News, Newsmax, and CNN; and a former employee of Fix California, a nonprofit founded by former acting director of national intelligence and longtime Trump ally Ric Grenell.

“The abortion pill, Mifepristone … is connected to the manufacturer of the deadly gas Zyklon B, used in the World War II concentration camps,” she wrote on X last fall. “Zyklon-B was originally used as a pesticide and marketed by the German Corporation for Pest Control, now known as Detia Degesch GmbH. Degesch, in which German chemical company I.G. Farben had a 42.5% interest and on whose board of 11 it had five seats, was the sole producer of the gas. According to the New York Times, ‘I.G. Farben played so important a role in Hitler’s war machine and in the Holocaust that it came to be called “the devil’s chemist.”’ It manufactured Zyklon B, the gas-chamber poison, among many other products, and its factories exploited more than 35,000 slave labourers, many from Auschwitz. It even built a concentration camp of its own to improve efficiency.”

It’s not clear where she came up with this deranged conspiracy, as mifepristone was actually developed by a French scientist and not approved for sale in France until the 1980s. The corporate history Zacharia hinted at is much more complicated: The company that developed Zyklon B was eventually, after decades of mergers and spin-offs, taken over by the multinational pharmaceutical company Sanofi. Sanofi also acquired the company that manufactured mifepristone, Roussel Uclaf, in the late 1990s."

One of my favorite law school professors was Cyrus Habib, who lost his sight due to cancer at age 8. An amazing man. Went on to become a Rhodes Scholar and an accomplished lawyer (and law professor), then became Lieutenant Governor of Washington state. He probably could have gone on to become governor but he actually decided to leave government and law and become a Jesuit priest.

I remember walking arm in arm with him around the law school building before and after class.

NEW: The Department of Justice (DOJ) under President Donald Trump has turned its Civil Rights Division’s mission on its head, a federal judge said in a decision blocking the administration from demanding states’ unredacted voter rolls. www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/...

https://bsky.app/profile/marcelias.bsky.social/post/3mxhmz4cuyc2k

From the writeup:

"The Department of Justice (DOJ) under President Donald Trump has turned its Civil Rights Division’s mission on its head, a federal judge said in a decision blocking the administration from demanding states’ unredacted voter rolls.

District Court Judge Sparkle L. Sooknanan, a Biden appointee who previously served as the division’s principal deputy assistant attorney general, called out the DOJ’s “startling arguments” that laws meant to ensure minority voters can exercise their constitutional right to vote also give the federal government the power to remove them from the voter rolls.

DOJ attorneys “suggest that every American citizen who registers to vote is the subject of a voter fraud investigation underway in the Civil Rights Division simply because they registered to vote,” Sooknanan wrote.

Her decision barring the DOJ from creating a national database containing sensitive voter information such as birthdates and Social Security numbers is a victory for voters and a blow to the Trump administration’s ongoing attempt to prove the president’s unfounded claims that noncitizens voting is widespread."

I have a feeling this latest ICE(Gestapo) incident in NYC is going to ramp up over the weekend. People are Fkng sick of this, and you don't Fck with New Yorkers.

2Cats2Furious's avatar

To me, one of the most appalling aspects (besides the shooting itself and the fact there was a 5 yo in the car) is that the ICE officers were wearing construction vests. How the fuck is someone to believe this is a legitimate law enforcement agency??

Afternoon toot, today: "It is my Great Honor to have just appointed, as Press Secretary, Katie Zacharia. Katie currently serves as Senior Communications Advisor to Truth Social (Trump Media & Technology Group), where she has been outstanding! A native of California, Katie previously served as Spokesperson and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at the Department of Homeland Security. Katie is a distinguished Graduate of Pepperdine University, and the Pepperdine Caruso School of Law, an attorney, and a frequent Commentator on outlets, including Fox News and Newsmax. She was previously involved in my Campaigns, assisting in key Swing States, where we won 7 out of 7. She has an unblemished record of support, and has been a loyal and brilliant supporter, right from the beginning. She is, likewise, a devoted fan and member of MAGA! I am confident that Katie will deliver strong results for our Country as the next White House Press Secretary, as she has the respect of, and will work fantastically with, the Media, the American People, and my Administration. Katie is replacing the fabulous Karoline Leavitt, who did a fantastic job as Press Secretary. Good luck Katie! President DONALD J. TRUMP"
