Here’s a dumb question. When I click on the little envelope on the Substack app, it takes me to a page that shows the recent post from Wonkette. However, the Friday happy hour post never shows up on this page and I have to go look for it manually. What’s up with that?
The Pugilist: ALISA VALDES-RODRIGUEZ on Lorenzo Salgado Araujo
toward the end:
THE PUGILIST sincerely hopes the American public of all backgrounds will summon the same outrage for this man’s death that it summoned for Renée Good’s and Alex Pretti’s. His life was worth exactly as much as theirs. So were the lives of Silverio Villegas-González, killed by an ICE agent outside Chicago, and Keith Porter Jr., a Black father and U.S. citizen shot dead by an off-duty ICE officer outside his Los Angeles home — names most Americans have never heard. If the outrage arrives only when the dead are white and hold a passport, then the outrage was never about state violence at all. It was about who is considered fully human in this country. And that selective grief is the racist, xenophobic rot that allowed an agency like ICE to be built, funded, masked, and unleashed in the first place. Readers who feel less for Lorenzo Salgado Araujo than they felt in January should sit with the reason why. The agents counted on it.
Renée and Alex got much more coverage because all the other protests going in Minneapolis at the time. ICE learned from that and are spreading their terror far and wide rather than concentrated in one place. But they are still same murderers they were in LA, Chicago, and Minneapolis.
The controversy surrounding the killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by federal immigration enforcement officials is growing amid new reports that the Trump administration is trying to deport three witnesses to the fatal shooting.
Juan Proaño, CEO of the League of United Latin American Citizens, said in a Thursday interview with The New Republic that the witnesses, all undocumented immigrants who were detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials after the shooting, are “being pressured to sign self-deportation orders.”
“They’re currently in detention,” said Proaño, who is serving as a representative for Salgado Araujo’s family. “These men hold the key to what actually happened.”
I never had the slightest desire to become President.
But now........Now I think I would really enjoy being President for a couple of years. This country wouldn't know what hit it. Would I be going too far if I used the phrase "fucking Nazis" in my inauguration speech?

Trump pardons Western NC man who sold 14,000 illegal emissions devices
"A man previously sentenced to prison for selling thousands of illegal “tuners,” designed to bypass vehicle emissions control systems, out of a shop in Flat Rock, was pardoned by President Donald Trump on July 3.
Matthew Sidney Geouge, now 39, pleaded guilty in 2021 to conspiracy, violating the Clean Air Act and tax evasion. He was sentenced in 2022 to just over a year in prison, along with three years of supervised release and to pay $2.5 million in restitution to the EPA and the IRS, the Times-News previously reported.
Trump announced the pardon in a July 3 post on Truth Social, saying that Geouge and five others he pardoned were “persecuted by the Biden Administration” for “fixing their car.” ...
Tuners are electronic devices that hook up to a vehicle’s computer and prevent emissions control faults from registering and being stored in the computer, in violation of the Clean Air Act, according to documents filed in federal court for the Western District of North Carolina. Geouge sold devices for diesel trucks, documents say. ...
Geouge began selling tuners and creating and selling “tunes,” or software for the devices, at least as early as 2008 until the beginning of 2017, court documents say.
He sold more than 14,000 illegal devices, continuing even after a 2015 notice of violation from the EPA, making more than $10 million through 2019, the Times-News reported.
He concealed his assets from the government by, on paper, having someone else receive his income from the devices, and owed about $346,000 for tax years 2015 to 2019, the Times-News reported.
The EPA penalized Geouge $4.1 million in 2018, which he had not paid as of the time of his 2021 charges, according to court documents.
Three of Geouge’s co-conspirators were sentenced to house arrest, community service, probation and fines of up to $150,000 rather than prison time, the Times-News reported.
Geouge’s businesses, Spartan Truck Solutions and Spartan Diesel Technologies, on South Allen Road in Flat Rock, were dissolved in 2017 and 2018, according to a North Carolina Secretary of State’s Office database."
Was hoping to have a chance to make a tourist visit to the Islamic Republic of Japan sometime soon, but that doesn't sound like a good idea at this point. It's so comforting to know that we have such a kind, generous, and very stable genius in charge of the nuclear codes.
Agreed. I also think there should be a cap on executive bonuses, and the % should be exactly the same as the % of raise that the lowest-paid workers in the company received.
Well this is an interesting story. The man went to Home Depot to get stuff. While there he came across a gentleman who was asking for help. He walked down from the Motel 6 because they said that maybe some day laborers would speak French. They told him that no one could help him and he walked out and saw my husband. Who does speak some French. I speak a little, he a little but more and Sebastien spoke a little English but more than our French.
Apparently he came for the US Cup and someone robbed him of everything! He had no Passport or credit card or money. He had somehow gotten to the French Consulate (he has to travel to LAX to depart for Paris and other things) and they squared him away to get to LA where his father will FedEx toiletries and clothing and another credit card. They also got him an emergency Clipper card for transportation to the San Jose airport. When he gets there he goes to Southwest where they will take him to the TSA office to get his boarding pass and clearance to go to LAX.
He needed a light jacket (I had a large from the swag closet from my last job that was far too large now that I lost weight) He also needed money for a few things so we gave it to him. He promises to send it back and I believe him because if this was a ruse, it was a helluva one. He was also very flustered and extremely grateful.
My husband just drove him to the airport, gave him a fanny pack, a pen and a small notebook for note taking as he was just walking around with sheets of paper with his instructions.
And that, my friends, is how you get invited to Nice France as a thank you. Bon journee, Sebastien!
Well, darn it. Other than a couple obvious "and then everybody clapped" macho bullshit stories, this Marx documentary is pretty much a dude that overcame PTSD and genuinely seems to connect with kids.
Obviously, a skilled editor made him sound normal, but on it's own, it's a Jesus heavy attempt to help people. It's also 14 years old, which makes it pre-Trump, and everyone was suppressing their crazy to some extent.
This is a test run to prepare us for the day that Dearest Dementia Leader shuffles off his mortal coil like a flapping wind sock at a used car dealership.
That why it's up to us -- "us" as citizens and "us" as independent media -- to raise as much hell as possible
Maybe we (again, both categorizations) have to be less hesitant and less ambivalent about using the power we DO have
Speaking of which -- in an attempt to "go to where the people are", by-the-book old school straight arrow Jack Smith went on with Jon Stewart the other night to reach as many viewers as possible
Like using the power of...going to the hospital where "Turtle" is "staying", and shouting at the top of our lungs, "Where is Mitch!!1!!" While holding up a painted sign saying, "Give us our Turtle!!1!"
I'm definitely not the person able to do it but a book chasing down all of the surviving members of the Jazz Messengers and recording their memories. even at this late date, would be close to ultimate cool.

What could the reason be?

Jesus Henry Christ.
We *should* be surprised, but...no. Of course.
coal rollers.
I hate those assholes, cause they make trouble for those of us who use that tech responsibly.
I'm assuming the people in the regime are collecting a vig on each one of these things. They write it up and have the demented toddler just sign them.
I'm told there is a sliding pay scale.
Have to wonder what the outtakes and bloopers of those "disarming" moves looked like.
"No, not like that! Stand this close so I can grab the gun. Try it again. No! Not like that either."
Thanks for the bookshop.org link! Bought a copy of the book and now I know of a better place to buy shit!
I used it the weekend before last!

Biden once referred to president of Egypt as president of Mexico. Both sides!

Or pay more than 0-3% tax.
Yo everybody, you don't want to get within arms reach of this guy anyway.
I wonder how well those skills work if the bad guy is ten feet away.
If you have to get that close to the target you might want to consider not using a gun and just go with grenades.
Watching "The Godfather" and sipping rum. I'm at the hospital scene -- "Men are coming here to kill him."
Damn, I like this movie (and no, this is not the first time I've seen it).

Yes.
Not gonna say you took a haircut, but that's the oldest trick in the book.
Please pardon my cynicism!
I helped a French person once. ONCE.
A French person helped ME once, which astonished me.
Here, it's "I gotta get back to New Jersey but I lost my wallet, can you help?"
I can't tell you how many times I've heard this one.
I believed it the first time, but then I wised up.

Basically its not worth watching beyond the elevator scene.
Jake Tapper and the rest of the media made this huge deal about Democrats covering up Biden’s decline.
But you know what’s going to happen if we find out Mitch has been dead and republicans are covering it up? Nothing. They’ll go, “so anyway…moving on.”
This is a test run to prepare us for the day that Dearest Dementia Leader shuffles off his mortal coil like a flapping wind sock at a used car dealership.
Random Thought: many cultures have customary forms of cremation for their dead family members.
I don't know why this thought came up when you mentioned Jack Tapper. Something to do with bonfires, bones and ashes I guess.
