Hegseth wanted Eisenhower’s globe for his office. His staff broke it.

Photos obtained by The Post show a gash in the World War II-era artifact that resulted from a botched relocation attempt inside the Pentagon

It was early this year when Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth wanted to move the world. A replica of it, anyway.

Two floor globes said to be used by Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower during World War II are housed in the Pentagon, where subsequent generations of Army leaders became custodians of the artifacts, according to people familiar with their lineage and an accompanying plaque dating them to the 1930s.

The historical significance was attractive to Hegseth, these people said, and his staff requested that the secretary’s office become the new home to one of the 30-inch globes.

Ordinarily, moving historical items within the building is a deliberate process overseen by trained curators. Instead, Hegseth’s staff dispatched its own team to relocate an Eisenhower globe. They lost control of the artifact and dropped it, sending the globe crashing onto its base and impaling the fragile shell near Antarctica, according to those familiar with the incident. The resulting gash appears to be several inches wide.

Pentagon officials denied The Washington Post’s request for a photo of the globe or to examine the artifact in person, but The Post separately obtained images of the damage.

The Army, in an email to The Post, acknowledged that the globe was damaged and said it occurred during an “attempted move” Feb. 3. Aside from the hole, “the spherical portion of the globe was detached from the metal mounting that allows it to rotate,” spokesman Christopher Surridge said in response to questions. Ultimately, the damaged relic was not relocated, he said.

Asked where the movers came from, Surridge referred The Post to Hegseth’s office. Spokespeople for the defense secretary declined to address questions about the incident.

After publication Thursday, a Defense Department official provided The Post with a brief, unattributed statement acknowledging the mishap. “Accidents happen,” it says, “we are grateful no one was harmed, and the globe is being repaired.” The statement does not say how much the repairs are expected to cost and when they would be complete.

The Army office in possession of the globe had expected to consult with experts at the U.S. Army Center of Military History on how to ensure its safe transport and properly document its relocation to Hegseth’s office, according to two people familiar with the matter. Like others, they spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe a previously undisclosed incident that is viewed as an embarrassment within the Defense Department.

The history staffers were furloughed due to a partial government shutdown stemming from a dispute in Congress over aspects of the Trump administration’s immigration policy. When the experts could not be reached, Hegseth’s staff decided to move the globe themselves, these people said.

It is unclear why Hegseth’s team did not wait for experienced help to move the artifact during the partial government shutdown, which ended the same day the globe was damaged. An “apparent lack of patience,” said one person familiar with the situation, appeared to be a factor.

The episode became instant fodder for gossip and jokes inside the Pentagon, with some decrying the apparent brashness and affinity for World War II nostalgia that they characterized as common themes throughout Hegseth’s tenure as defense secretary.

[snip]

Ty Seidule, a retired brigadier general who taught history at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, lamented news that the globe had been damaged.

“Hegseth wants an Eisenhower totem to be like Ike, brilliant in war and peace,” Seidule said. He has criticized the defense secretary previously for overriding a policy change that removed Confederate names and symbology from several military bases located in the southern U.S., an effort Seidule helped lead.

“Hegseth is no Ike. The globe won’t give him Ike’s attributes of humility, intellect and judgment,” Seidule said.

Vote Vote Vote! And take a close look at your local races as much as statewide. In our house, we're only voting for city counsel members who are AGAINST building data centers in our town.

We're never been one-issue voters, but it makes sense to lean heavy on this since AI (and billionaires) are trying to kill us all. Of course, health insurance companies are saying 'hold my beer, amateurs'.

The organizer behind Catholic bishops praying over President Donald Trump has a past that should have raised alarms, a new report shows.

Mario Enzler, a senior adviser at the Heritage Foundation who arranged Thursday's Oval Office prayer, was once called a "con artist" by professors who found he had claimed academic degrees he never earned, Christopher Hale of Letters from Leo reported Friday. Hale built on reporting from The Pillar, which found Enzler spent weeks inviting bishops to the event.

Enzler served in the Pontifical Swiss Guard under Pope John Paul II from 1989 to 1993 and has since turned that stint into a memoir and a speaking career. He went on to work in banking, teach at the Catholic University of America and, in 2020, take over as business school dean at the University of St. Thomas in Houston.

His tenure there ended in 2022. Faculty members digging into his background discovered the Italian university where he said he earned a Ph.D. doesn't award doctorates, and the school he listed for his bachelor's degree is a high school, according to the Houston Chronicle. An accounting professor later told The Chronicle of Higher Education that Enzler acknowledged he had no doctorate.

The Pillar also found that in a 2022 speech, Enzler claimed a finance doctorate from a university in Milan while St. Thomas was billing him as a doctor of music. Heritage hired him in 2025.

Denver Archbishop James Golka led the Oval Office prayer as 11 other bishops gathered around the Resolute Desk.

"Most of these guys just don't think this way," a source familiar with the meeting told The Pillar, adding, "Still, what were they thinking? It's two weeks away from the midterms."

A senior official at the Vatican's Dicastery for Bishops called the gathering "a highly inappropriate meeting and an insult to Pope Leo," Hale reported. A spokesperson for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops said it was "not organized with or by the USCCB," and a source close to conference president Archbishop Paul Coakley said he was "deeply frustrated."

The White House is standing behind the meeting. Spokeswoman Taylor Rogers told the National Catholic Reporter that "there has never been a greater president for Catholic Americans than President Trump."

Yeah, I am not a car expert in any way, but I do like the non-clunky Teslas. They have an elegant, sleek shape.

I know that unless I'm stuck in a car on a country road (which I often am) I'll learn about it because all around me horns will start honking and people will be shouting and screaming.

It will be some combo of the "I'm mad as hell" scene from Network, and the closing segments of Lily Tomlin's dream sequence in 9 to 5.

Having not had a Guinness in years, just last week I picked up that very can, $3 for a single.

I remember liking it in my yute. But on it's own? Hot garbage. Totally devoid of any flavor at all.

I mean, like flavorless. That combined with the pathetically low ABV made for a mistake.

YMMV, of course.

We still have three bottles of Guiness in the fridge from last March 17th. It just doesn't taste like much. It's very pretty, but that's about it. Skepti has Irish roots and insists on having it. She didn't seem to care much this year. I would rather have a good Mexican beer.

I need a big bucket I can fill with hot water to soak my foot. As it is. I’m sitting here in the bathroom running the hottest water over my foot as I rest my leg on the side of the tub. It feels nice.

It’s been a rough day mentally. Sleep was weird, and that was after hours of not being able to get comfortable. Dreaming was equally weird: I met Michelle Obama, who started off gracious, and then… And I met some nice security people (routine patrol, nothing I did) and their German shepherd dogs. Dogs were super polite and good boys, but still trained security so no petting.

I swear this is the kind of thing I dream about sober. My brain is messed up.

I had neither the energy nor willpower to do anything today. I’ve been sipping Gatorade and nibbling wheat thins all day, but I couldn’t drag myself from bed save for rolling to the bathroom.

The good news is, if things feel better tomorrow I can get out and see the sun. Maybe. At least it’s an away game for LSU, so traffic won’t be horrifying on the bus.

I don’t say this enough, but thank you all for letting me come in here and bitch, whine, and moan. It means more to me than you may know. And it certainly helps me decompress.

Craig Nixon's avatar

And thank YOU for the updates.

It's inspiring to see you handling this, Shiloh.

I would be ded, or in a fetal position, crying like an 8 year old girl.

Keep on...
