This is a great drink Hooper, I missed it when first posted but it suits the late summer heat. The bitter and sweet balance is perfect, little bitter on the palette chased by the creaminess chased again by the bitter finish. Only downside is pacing myself.

I've tried a couple times this week to make the orange whip from How To Drink youtube channel only to be met with disappointment, might be from the sad state of Oranges in September. But blending your recipe with his may get me there tomorrow.

I mean sure, California is doing as much as it can on climate change without being constantly struck down by fascist courts, but sure, let's punish it for having made the effort I suppose?

Elderly John's avatar

Claims California needs to change its policies, but offers no ideas how. It's easy to blame the people who are affected by a natural disaster, but almost nobody has a suggestion of how to improve things. What, I wonder, would this schmuck have California do? Rake the forests? Controlled burn? Carry desalinized water from the sea?

Thesaurus Wrecks's avatar

If your patriotism is telling you to hate your fellow Americans then that’s not patriotism. That’s fascism.

TootsStansbury 🇺🇦's avatar

But I’m to the point where I hate the fascists.

TerseNurse's avatar

there is a huge difference between hating the fascists, and hating the regular people who are just trying to live their lives. I wouldn't piss in the mouths of the NC Supreme Court ifn their throats were on fire; but I still feel bad for all the flood victims in that state and I want them to get aid.

Let me sum up's avatar

There are days when I'm tempted to say maybe blue states should just figure out a way to turn off the $ spigot that props up red states...I would genuinely be shocked if a D ever called for letting red states suffer just bc they vote like idiots, but our side just won't bc we're possessed with that pesky empathy thing.

Dear Mel Gibson, next time you have an idea that strikes you as "an insane thing to think" or a "horrible theory [you] made up in [your] head," don't fucking take it to Laura Ingraham or any other right-wing propaganda outlet. Just shut up and get some sleep.

I ordered myself a planner I saw on instagram for end of life care. Not that I'm approaching, but you can become disabled at any time and I have special funeral requests. I also need to get all my life insurance stuff updated so that it goes to the proper people.

TerseNurse's avatar

Do you have a Health Care Proxy? If you do, make a copy and put it on the front of your fridge. If you don't, designate one and talk to them explicitly about what you would want. But choose carefully. That goes for all the rest of you Wonkers!!

Craig Nixon's avatar

Ya know what? I just realized that the person I would designate is very likely a mutual friend of ours.

Elderly John's avatar

All of us are always approaching. Whenever I see some young person texting while driving straight at me, I am reminded that accidents can happen. Every morning on the news there are people commenting about people they didn't expect to die.

Good to look at this on an annual basis. Some people I expected to receive my "vast wealth" have died.

Thesaurus Wrecks's avatar

Media: Democrats need to learn how to be more Patriotic like republicans. They’ve lost their patriotism!

Republicans: there should be no aid to California unless they change their policies. There has to be consequences!

A federal court struck down the Department of Education’s guidance on Title IX on Thursday, and critics of the changes to the federal antidiscrimination statute celebrated the action as a legal win with wide-ranging ramifications.

Betsy DeVos, the former education secretary during President-elect Donald Trump’s first term, said on X that “the radical, unfair, illegal, and absurd Biden Title IX rewrite is GONE.”

Conservative activists celebrated the news.

Tiffany Justice, a co-founder of Moms for Liberty, said that parents won and Biden lost.

“The Court standing up for parents' rights is AMAZING,” Justice wrote on X. “The U.S. Constitution matters, and no federal law can compel the speech of pronouns in support of gender ideology nonsense in public school – K-12 or colleges.”

“Huge win for girls and women everywhere!” Riley Gaines, an activist and athlete, wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “This morning, a federal court ruled in favor of reality. Biden's Title IX rewrite has been vacated nationwide.”

Tiffany Justice deserves the modern-day version of the Anita Bryant treatment. She should be humiliated at every turn. Tiffany Justice is a name from some satirical cartoon, isn't it? Her real name? Are you shitting me? No wonder she has it in for the rest of the kids on the playground. She was probably mocked all through school.

Political leaders would ideally respond to such horrific circumstances by putting aside partisan differences and standing together to help the victims rebuild. But something very different is happening this week in right-wing spaces.

President-elect Donald Trump is lying a lot in order to blame his political opponents for the fire. The president-elect's Truth Social feed this week is alternating between memes highlighting his purported plans to take over Canada and Greenland and falsehood-heavy rants about how “the gross incompetence and mismanagement” of President Joe Biden and California Gov. Gavin Newsom are responsible for the fire.

The main avenue the right has seized upon — blaming California Democrats and environmentalists for supposedly limiting the water supply used to fight the fire — is entirely false.

His right-wing propagandists quickly parroted his argument to their audiences. On OAN, Dan Ball claimed that “You liberal Democrats running that city, county, and the state have blood on your hands tonight,” before reading Trump’s post. On Fox, Jesse Watters claimed of Newsom that “there is no water coming out of the fire hydrant because this man mismanages the water there.” And Larry Kudlow said on his Fox Business show that the governor “cut the water flow that never got to Southern California, in defense of this obscure fish.”

But none of this is true.

I agree, but I don't know how we would do that. :(

We are in a deadlock, though, and as long as things continue this way we can't be a country.

We can't be a country with 30-40% of MAGA assholes running around in a separate fucking (fantasy) reality.

TootsStansbury 🇺🇦's avatar

I don’t know either but we have to figure out a way. This shit is untenable.

That could help.

Per Mapledurham:

Plus this in today’s Guardian: “An analysis by Carbon Brief estimated last August that [Trump’s] return could add 4bn tonnes of US carbon emissions by 2030 compared to Democrat plans – inflicting $900bn in global climate damage. To grasp its scale, the emissions surge would equal the combined annual output of the EU and Japan or the emissions of the world’s 140 lowest-emitting countries.” The Carbon Brief report itself is a terrifying read, link in the article: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/jan/10/the-guardian-view-on-the-la-fires-donald-trumps-denial-and-division-fuel-climate-inaction

For a while in college I insisted on spelling the word color with a u in it.

I do not know why really, just liked the look of it better. Plus, hung out with the Irish guys and they would rag on us for spelling things wrong.

Once in a while it still slips out

Babe Paley's avatar

We went to England for the first time right before 1st grade and I thought it was magic, and started adding a "u" to certain words. My first grade teacher (of infinite patience, because I was smart yet obnoxious) asked me why I was spelling things like that and I said "that's how the Queen does it" and she basically was like, well, you're not the queen of anything, so do it the way I tell you.

Linoleum von Curmudgeon, Esq.'s avatar

Eventually they will get what they so tirelessly desire: a sterile, lifeless landscape filled only with perfect conformity, empty platitudes and a bottomless pit of ennui inside their souls.

They will cry out "Where did all those liberals and beatniks go that we so much loved to troll and torment? Things are SOOOOO boring now! This sucks!"

We won't have gone away. We will just have given them what they always wanted while we will turn our attention to creative subversion in art, literature and music; they can never stamp out the spirit inside us.

In the meantime they will turn on each other in endless inquisitions against each other over ideological purity and loyalty tests.

R. Riddle's avatar

Just wait until year 3.5, when you're spending all of your waking hours if fed-up voters will return the US to normalcy or if they're saying, "Yeah, sure, let's put the Jews in concentration camps."

Jen's Taking Greenland's avatar

think we learned that answer this past november.
