In the past, I discovered that you have to apply for Medicaid first because if you apply for Unemployment first they call it income and don't give you the Medicaid. At least in NY but probably in other states so maybe do that.

Ta, Stephen.

"People are being way too sanguine about a lot of the white-collar industries," said Martha Gimbel, an economist and labor market expert at Schmidt Futures, a philanthropic initiative. "This thing is going to come for us all."

Ask this former legal secretary and legal proofreader about that if you like. Word processing, which used to occupy entire floors at top law firms in NYC, for many of which I temped back in the day, are gone. Who does the word processing? Low-paid workers in Chennai. And what little legal proofreading is still done here is done to check the work of similarly low-paid workers, also in India.

Fortunately, I'm grateful that the newly-laid-off workforce does not include me. I'm in healthcare, and my job is considered essential. I go into the office once a week, and work from home the rest of the week. I just finished a major monthly project, and emailed it to the relevant person, who will be at his desk tomorrow.

Just be careful with these SBA loans, if they are anything like the SBA small business loans. Someone close to me got one after a natural disaster, and it has been a nightmare from the get-go. The amount of fuck-ups on their end that required constant fixes took nearly a year to clear up (and I don't know that they ever actually got cleared up). Be patient and for gods' sake, keep contact with your caseworker--and be ready for your caseworker to be replaced suddenly at any time.

So these "it's a conspiracy" folks are exactly the same as the "gun conspiracy truthers' in that they are fine getting tiny children killed. Sandy Hook didn't change anything, and this likely won't either.

Loss of revenue has caused so-called “white collar" employers to lay off workers at law firms and tech start-ups.Slight mention, except for maybe the start ups, most of these could afford to give their folks a couple weeks. They are not doing so for the profit margin

Healthcare worker here, too. Also deemed essential. I am feeling like the luckiest fucking duck on the planet right now. And getting a sinking feeling that we will be among the very last folks working in this economy, along with Instacart delivery people and other folks in the food chain. Even the Post Office is being projected to go belly up in about 3 months.
