Let me de-frontier gibberish that. Our author grew up in Mesa, Arizona. He collected rocks in his backyard. When the weather started to warm up in February, he was allowed to pitch a pup tent and sleep out. He had a picture of Roy Rogers in a wooden frame in his bedroom. When he finished his homework, he wrote comic books about camping somewhere other than his backyard. He resides in Mesa to this day.

At the time, my charitable interpretation -- probably overly-charitable, because I was a sweet summer child all those decades ago in <checks notes> October 2017 -- was that Trump was trying to say something about how brave Sgt. Johnson was, that he knew the danger but served his country anyway.

In retrospect, nah, it was probably just as fucked up as it sounds.
