You are watching an old Johnson and Johnson promo video on your header today. I adore the shots of the old, bustling pharmacy and drugstore products of the era. More details here: https://open.substack.com/pub/martiniambassador/p/ye-olde-druggist

The marvelous pharmacy museum in New Orleans comes to mind.

I was pretty sure this was not an ad for the new Amazon Pharmacy, which would likely kill me if getting drugs delivered meant anything like going through what I did just to receive a couple of books.

Thanks Martini! I have a deep fondness for old-school pharmacies and drugstores, too. My dad worked for Rexall until I was in junior high, then NatureMade until he passed. I used to go on the road with him and we'd hit 3-4 independent pharmacies, then find a La Quinta with a steakhouse nearby and start fresh the next morning. We had so much fun on those trips, and I got to spend a lot of time looking around some very cool stores. Thanks for bringing up some fond memories, honey.

It really was! My dad and I never had the closest relationship, but when it was just the two of us on the road, we always got along really well. He's been gone many years now, and I'm glad I have some good memories with him.

There's an old-timey pharmacy in Lexington, MA, aptly named Lexington Pharmacy.

I can't think of any other independent pharmacy in that part of the Boston 'burbs.

Expand full comment
Gingerwentworth's Theory's avatar

I'm sure any store in Lexington MA is nice. But I went to a drug store near where I lived on College Ave in Berkeley-- not old fashioned but just thinking it would be a good place to get my prescriptions and that it would be nice and quiet compared to those big places. It was but it turned out my prescriptions cost 900 times the cost in the other places. Did you know that's why we see these huge chains everywhere? I've never recovered from the shock. I guess that's why there aren't many of these small ones. It was nice and quiet though.

Expand full comment
Mr Mild - BlueVotingBastard💙's avatar

Well that's scary. Sorry you had that sticker shock.

We haven't been to a small independent drugstore in ages, if we did it wouldn't be for a prescription, mostly for nostalgia or to find something we couldn't find at CVS or Walgreens.

Mrs Mild has an Rx for an inhaler that with our Medicare Part D (for drugs) has a copay of over $200 at CVS. We use GoodRx at Walmart and get it for less than half that.

Gingerwentworth's Theory's avatar

I'll remember that. My days before medicare were pretty rough. My migraine medicine! All that-- it was all such an upsetting thing, and I know it's a situation a million people are still in. What puzzles me is these plans Republicans boast about for getting rid of Medicare etc. Surely those would be a teeny bit unpopular??? I mean-- politically a loser?

Pharmacies can be interesting and magical. For many, many years, there was such a place in New Haven, CT called Taft Hair and Cosmetics. It's closed now but was owned by the parents of Dorit Lemel Kemsley of RHofBH fame. No one will probably know or care about that, but Robyn might!

Jennifer's Pharmacy in Clayton MO was a lovely place pre-COVID, with lots of alternative health products, an eclectic selection of greeting cards, cool kids' toys, and an old-timey soda fountain. Post-COVID, I found they had moved from their prime location with lots of foot traffic to a spot on the second or third floor of an old office building. Their new business model has ditched the frills that I found so attractive. I haz sad.

Watched an interview with Margaret Hamilton. She was talking about a scene with Fields in a train that was supposed to just be a couple of lines. But he kept going, improvising a whole conversation that she had to keep up while trying to end it by staring out the window. And the cameras were rolling, so she had to keep talking while getting more and more pissed off.

Finally the director cut and the whole crew cracked up. No idea if that conversation made it into the film.

Except I think I’m supposed to avoid hot beverages. And sandwiches that are hard to chew. Was thinking about treating myself to a glass of wine last night, but alcohol is on the no-no list too.

Thinking back over my experiences with my own stepmother 'He was never happy with you people,' I think I'd watch the grocery shopping scene in Double Indemnity, and then I'd buy your Stepmother several boxes of Lux Laundry Detergent with a note telling her it's "for her hair," some "Rennet" to thicken her ankles, tapioca for her skin, and some Powdered Eggs. Say you "can't afford the regular kind." Your stepmother probably won't be as old as mine was but, getting so many gifts will prevent her complaining to your Dad.

We bombed a hospital to get ISIS in Iraq. War is a terrible thing, but hospitals lose their protection when they became military headquarters. Blame Hamas for putting all those people in danger.

Expand full comment
DeeDee D's avatar

Actually Hamas was UNDER the hospital, not inside it. And many innocent people including neonates were killed.

We should have accessed the tunnel system and attacked Hamas underground where they were. Instead of what happened.

Also, just because “we” did it does NOT make it moral.

And even worse, the violence and savagery will hurt Israel. All the int’l groups including the UN and NGOs like Medicins Sans Frontieres are citing multiple war crimes.

🕊️

Expand full comment
Tovarish Z's avatar

They are both under and inside. If you think them limited themselves from the complex, you are deluding yourself. Securing the hospital is the first step toward accessing the tunnels and protects civilians.

Accessing the tunnel system directly is exactly what Hamas wants. The IDF is fighting a war, they are not going to fight it the way Hamas wants. Who chose to build all those tunnels under hospitals?

The UN and Medicins Sans Frontieres seem to missing the war crime of sending rockets at civilian centers in Israel. Nor do they talk about Hamas shooting Palestinians trying to move south to safe zones. They have a clear bias.

War is itself immoral. Though rules are in place to make it less horrendous, civilian death does not = war crime. It is about proportionality of the military goal to civilian damage. High civilian casualties for minor military gain = wrong.

High military gain with lower civilian causalities = ok

Bombing civilian places is ok as long as warnings are given which the IDF does.

"Yeah nah, I know Hamas was in that hospital..." Based on what, exactly, besides what Bibi says? The IDF now has full control, and no weapons/rockets/secret bunkers have been found, but they are "questioning" patients and staff, so pray for them, please.

I don't hate my mother-in-law, she's just an energy vampire. She keeps "score" on who has wronged her, or not shown her enough appreciation and consideration. And she is ALWAYS trying to start political debates by vomiting right-wing-talking points.

She had a mom that literally told her "I don't love you" multiple times and otherwise wasn't a great lady to be around. In response, she's basically demanding displays and symbols of affection and to constantly have her feelings validated and managed for her.

Put the Quisling in jail. Do it now. For today, contempt of court will serve as a perfectly good reason. Later he can be convicted of capital crimes, and we can haul Old Sparky out of whatever museum it's gathering dust in.

In my opinion, he should be condemned to death. He's a menace to the Republic.

I've always wondered about this, so thanks Rebecca.

I made a bookmark from the link here on the website, which I promptly labeled "Wonkazon" because I apparently model my lexicon on the Smurfs (and no, I don't know why James Comer called Rep. Moskowitz a Smurf, either).

My Wonkazon bookmark is always how I go to The Dreaded Online Seller. But I didn't know if, between flipping between the cart and various things I was considering adding to it, if the ability to get Wonkette a cut was broken.

So, here's Wonkette being all servicey like that!

I noticed in that article about Jennifer Weisselberg she mentioned Trump dismissing Secret Service agents so he could talk privately with Allen Weisselberg while Trump was president and supposedly had no involvement in his business interests. Add in that Trump regularly communicated with Junior and Eric (family members, ya know), Ivanka and Jared were official members of his administration and a clear path for exchanging business info, and the mysterious "executive time" of several hours built into many of Trump's daily schedules and I find it hard to believe Trump was not still actively involved in everything his real estate businesses did. As I have said since 2017, my bet is the most frequent two words spoken in any Trump organization meeting while Trump was in office were "Dad says."

(from the tab written by the esteemed $5Feminist)

"“In my 33 years I have not had a witness testify better,” (Trump defense lawyer) Kise said after Trump left the stand. “He’s told everyone the facts. Now that the American people know what’s going on, maybe something will change.”"

Depending upon the American people knowing something and then things changing because of it is hardly a reliable way to get things done. After all many American people are convinced the world is flat. Other American people believe that gold fringe on a flag is the source of magic power; such power confers the ability to fly or turn invisible depending upon geographic location. Still other American people think reality teevee programs are "really real".

If your defense strategy is founded upon the idea that once the American people become "aware" (dare I say "woke"?) they will do something something something that will get you out of jail then you are going to be waiting a looooonnnggg time in jail for that something to happen.
