It was hard to taste a few kernels but no, not really. "Indian" corn is field or feed - not sweet. BTW, my aunt raised a heritage (before that was a term) called "Country Gentleman" that didn't have the kernels in rows - they were random on the cob. Tricky to eat!
They can still be a-holes and do that. They are vital to our communities, but I agree that far too many wingnuts scream “socialisms!” and fear the End is nigh when this country depends on countless socialist programs. I do think America can find a balance of socialism and capitalism and find balance if conservatives stop pretending the first is evil and the second holy.
Watching Enrst's response literally made me cringe. Don't we all have nightmares about having to face a final exam without having taken the course? That was exactly the kind of answer I would sputter out, in my nightmare.
Not really. The corn you see waving in the breeze, is field corn. Only 1% of the total corn crop is sweet corn, the type you actually eat. 40% of the crop goes to ethanol production. They term it "dry distilling whateverthefuck." A further 25% goes to animal feed, and the rest is used as inputs to additives, but not much of it used for corn syrup. BTW, there's corn in just about everything you use, including your toothpaste. Corn farmers are largely subsidized to largely subsidize other industries including the cattle industry.
If the farmers weren’t subsidized food prices would be much higher. Higher than poor people could pay. Farmers - not agribusiness- makes little money for a shitload of work. Maybe you know more than it appears, but generally farmers - not - agribusiness don’t make that much.
That pasted-on grin of Ernst's during her fiasco of an answer is positively terrifying. She was obviously trained to keep her teeth on display whenever she gets into trouble.
Sure, industrial farming is evil. But the farmers you're talking about - the whiners who vote for Republicans and then ask for subsidies to keep from going bankrupt - they are still farmers doing farmy things like raising the animals that you eat, and that eat the feed corn that you dismiss. And they are still up to their eyeballs in debt.
And it would be nice if we could keep family farms alive because a) otherwise all of our food will be imported from China and/or grown on factory farms, which is not a good thing; and b) a lot of them are Black and have been fucked over enough; and c) they get up at 5 am so we don't have to.
