Regarding executions ...

In an open thread comment yesterday, I detailed witnessing a state attorney, arguing before a judge, decline to rule out drowning as a possible form of execution. Seems fitting here also too.

From the AP article on Ken Paxton's travel habits: "Texas does not require the attorney general to report his day-to-day whereabouts, and other state records do not often reveal the length or purpose of the out-of-state travel. Texas, however, keeps records for the monthly expenses incurred by his security detail. Those records show reimbursements for travel outside Texas spiked from about $30,000 in 2015 to nearly $400,000 in 2024."

FFS Ken, that is a lot of corruption for just one man in one state. Texas needs to start requiring the attorney general to report his whereabouts and why he is out of the state.

It's being breathlessly reported that Thom Tillis told trmp off in a series of texts, that were, evidently, "blistering", that he doesn't take bullshit from anyone. This is, of course, after he decided to retire.

Here's an idea:

You botch an execution, that's a FULL PARDON for the person. You are responsible for restoring them to health, and you do NOT get to try again.

Local national tab:

Trump nominates 2 as new federal judges for NC, including James Comey prosecutor

In recent months multiple Republican judges around North Carolina have announced their resignations, allowing their party to try replacing them ahead of the November elections when Democrats could flip control of Congress.

"One of the nominees worked for the late Republican Sen. Jesse Helms. The other has been working on the prosecution of Trump political enemy James Comey, the former FBI director who oversaw an investigation into the Russian government’s involvement in the 2016 presidential campaign. ...

Federal judges serve lifetime appointments on the bench. While the president nominates federal judges, they can’t take office unless the Senate votes to approve them. Republicans currently hold 53 seats in the chamber.

Support from home-state senators is often key. And on Thursday the state’s two Republican U.S. senators, Ted Budd and Thom Tillis, quickly announced their support for Trump’s picks.

“Both Phil and Brian have built distinguished and respected legal careers, and I know that they will be exemplary additions to the district courts,” Budd said."

I’ve started God Emperor of Dune but I may not finish it. It resembles the Robert Heinlein novels where his competent-man trope becomes a self-righteous caricature, where he philosophized for pages rather than tell a story. I Will Fear No Evil and Time Enough for Love. True, the Herbert novel has a promising allegory about vast power disconnecting a person from the rest of the human race, but his protagonist sees himself as a martyr for the greater good.

Rosy red ASS's avatar

I tried to read the books after "Children of Dune" and noped out. Heinlein could have left it with the first book. I know his son wrote most of them after he died but I still think the first one was the only one I should have read.

"I saw that if men wanted to be safe from themselves, that would mean they'd have to give up greed. They wouldn't pay that price for liberty. What is it called when (or that?) a central infection or disease releases or activates many other latent diseases? . . . Damn it Jim, I'm an artist not a doctor!

What I mean is that the Trump Disease® has released so much other crazy shit that it's hard to keep track of it all. For example, the so-called 'Project 2025' is a list of some of the main diseased ideas which have been activated.

The GOP's wholesale rewriting of history continues, including their utter bullshit assertion that "Nixon was framed". Insane and really chilling to see what is crawling out from behind their curtain of 'God, Guns and Country' self-righteousness. (that is the title of a Mike Fuckabee book).

"GOP lawmaker: Nixon was ‘couped out of office,’ ‘framed’ during Watergate" –https://thehill.com/homenews/house/6124635-moore-nixon-couped-watergate/

"Rep. Riley Moore (R-W.Va.) said Thursday that former President Nixon was “absolutely couped out of office” and added that he was “framed” during the infamous Watergate scandal.

“We now know more about the deep state and its power and ability to literally change things at the top,” the lawmaker said during his remarks at the Nixon Foundation’s annual Grand Strategy Summit in Washington.

“An interesting aspect of this as it relates to Richard Nixon — he knew all of this,” Moore continued. “He knew it, and he stayed quiet about it. Because he didn’t want to erode the confidence of the American people in our system of governance and our institutions.”

“The truth is now out there, so I think people feel a bit more liberated to talk about Richard Nixon and what an amazing president he was in this country,” he concluded."

In that same article this guy is referenced:

"Former Nixon aide Geoff Shepard was also reportedly invited by a senior DOJ official to give a presentation at the department’s headquarters, per The Wall Street Journal. Shepard has repeatedly asserted since the 1972 scandal that Watergate was a plot to hide who Nixon’s Democratic donors were in his reelection campaign."

"The Nixon Conspiracy: Watergate and the Plot to Remove the President" –https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4LO0o4NOW4

"Geoff Shepard was an attorney on President Richard Nixon’s White House staff for five years and served as Deputy Counsel on his Watergate defense team. This book, the third in his series, is primarily based on four caches of internal prosecutorial documents that have surfaced in the past eight years. In each instance, Shepard was the first to review and analyze these materials—including descriptions of prosecutors’ secret meetings with Watergate judges, their suppression of exculpatory evidence, and their secret allegations regarding President Nixon’s own conduct. What makes Shepard’s works unique is his reliance on actual documents, many publicly available at the National Archives."
