I gave a ride to a young French couple hitchhiking to the Grand Canyon and he told me he rented an apartment 2 blocks from the beach in France for the same price as Austin, Texas. I was shocked...
Along northern coast totally possible. I wouldn't think South of France but I've never been.
We have friends in Chicago who used to live in Philly and said It's similarly priced.
Even out of the way, non-urban places have become very expensive in U.S. We were told DC became pricey because of property insurance increasing after the Pentagon was attacked.
We were told this by wealthy people in real estate business. Never made sense to me.
lotsa upfists. I used to live there and often had a confuz about the taxes. I gotta say thouh that the vehicle inspection facility in SW (20 years ago or so) was amazingly efficient.
I remember visiting some cousins in Newport RI years ago, and while we were out shopping the girl working the till in one of the boutiques asked us where we were from. When we said we lived in DC, she looked stunned and said, "I didn't know people actually LIVED there!" What, do they think that it's deserted when the tourists and politicians go home?
However, I would not call most residents "beautiful people." There's a lot of hate imo. A lot of liars and scammers.
Also, Two Amy's is not the best pizza in DC. It's over-priced, overrated, and the restaurant staff not very friendly (not to mention the abusive noise level inside the restaurant). Pete's Apizza and Pizza Paradiso are both far superior.
Just over the DC line by 1 block, Roscoe's Pizzeria is excellent.
DC Reynolds is great.
My family does not support professional American football for a variety of reasons. The DC team is disgusting. The players should boycott playing for their asshole owner.
While most residents voted yes for recreational marijuana, our idiot mayor is against it. Also too. Home Rule means assholes in Congress can stop recreational marijuana from happening. Seriously, look how quickly other states have brought marijuana to market. In DC it'll take years and years and the price much higher than others.
I have a difficult time understanding why people like living here. Or are proud of being from DC or living in DC. It's a strange place. Compared to other world capitals it's a small expensive boring strange city.
I no longer have any hope that DC will achieve State status during my last few years here. In the mean time. I lose myself in the beauty of Rock Creek Park, weekends in Shenandoah, and lavender Margarita's at Urban Butcher.
Jeb? Will never be pres. He needn't worry about moving here.
I don't miss DC. There are a lot of cool things to do in the District, but if you're pulling down less than about 45-50K, living there isn't one of them.I miss things about DC. Here in Austin, I have the right to vote, but it doesn't make a damn bit of difference and there's no proof the machine is hooked up to anything. At least in DC, they don't bother with the pretense. And there's free red pandas on demand at the Zoo, and shitty drinks at Atomic Billiards on Thursday nights.
I stand corrected. Philly & Houston.

It would be the first case of voter fraud in Texas by a Democrat.
Shypixel. Thanks for the return of the next/prev article at the bottom of the comments.

Thank you. Agree with most.

He's a freak.
Can you further explain your idea. I'm not sure I understand what you mean about the billions on military spending being responsible for VA sprawl.
Scandalous DC intrigue! With backstabbing- but sounds delicious!

Jeb! We already have a little on-going recession here in DC. It's called sequestration.
I would let you use my address
I spent more than 25 years in DC, and thank you for this column!
Voter fraud libel!
How many times am I legally allowed to upvote this? Because, I, western state bleeding heart liberal that I am, so totally love this! Stick to it, DC!
