...any ideas coming out of the UChicago Econ Department should be rejected out of hand.

Of course, it's hard to think of any Econ department, academic, government, or private industry, that I wouldn't say that about.

Cheerleaders for capitalist exploitation of people and the planet.

Longtime lurker but I need to add a correction: Natural gas is bad when you burn it (generating CO2) or directly emit it (in areas with poor oil & gas infrastructure, mainly--not much in the US). Decarbonizing natural gas makes solid carbon plus hydrogen fuel, so no CO2 is emitted. Can elaborate on this if desired!

The money for rural broadband is just a gift to the telecoms. This is the fourth time they've passed subsidies to "enable" the telecoms to wire up rural America, the first three times the companies took the money and spent the majority of it on stock buybacks. None of the previous subsidies supplied even 25% of the expected benefit, in fact none of them even hit the minimum requirements, and yet nothing happened to the telecoms. Now that Starlink (Elon Musk) and Kuipier (Jeff Bezos) are deploying actual usable satellite internet with PLANET-WIDE coverage this is the telecoms' last chance for another money grab which taxpayers will see almost no benefit from.

Same song, different piper.

Whats she gonna do with it, I wonder. Do with it to me, I mean. YOW!

I'll be in my root cellar.

Starlink is out of beta now, and should be available in your area. The initial cost of the phased array antenna is a bit pricey, but the monthly service is reasonable and the antenna is expected to last 20 years. It's actually faster and more reliable than what I get here in suburban Seattle.
