Would have been interesting if they negotiated that whites enslaved Black people during odd years, but Black folk enslaved white people during even years.

Young adult children are great.

Mine (almost 24) dropped by today to throw a load of laundry in. Her big toes and pinky toes were literally poking out of her sneakers. Mr. B. remarked upon this. Her response: "Yeah, I need new shoes. Hey mom? Do you want to go shopping?"

Well, yes. Yes, I do. Always.

So we drove to the mall, where we used to go together when she was a teenager. That was always hit or miss. The day could be derailed if she spotted someone she knew, or if she had not gotten enough sleep, or if she were hungry, or simply if the hormones were hitting the wrong way that day.

Now that she's older and living on her own, it was just fun. First stop was the shoe store, where she picked out new hiking boots (she's very outdoorsy). She talked me into getting a pair for myself, too, even though I don't "hike," per se. But I tried them on and WOW, such support. And I do have plans to go for an outdoor walk with a friend on Tuesday, when the trail will be covered in snow. So--impulse buy for me.

We went to a few other stores to get things that she needed and wanted, including one store where they didn't have what she needed/wanted but in which she found an adorable impulse buy of her own. We capped off the day with mall pretzels, because no visit to the mall is complete without them.

All of this went on my credit card because it is a delight to pay for your child's desires when they no longer need you to.

(My mother knew this. Well into my 30s she would insist on taking me to the ceramics gallery in town and buying me anything I expressed an interest in. Did I need it? No. Could I have afforded it? Probably, if I really, really wanted it, but also no. But now I do have a pretty impressive collection of ceramic vases, plates, bowls, and serving ware, and I think of her every time I use them.)

Anyway, good day.
