I'd love to abolish the EC, but it will never happen, because enough states want to keep it that we'll never amend the Constitution to change that. If Democrats just concentrate on using it to their advantage, they can lock the GOP out of the White House for the indefinite future. Particularly if they tip Texas blue.
I see their ploy--they "joke" to see what the reaction is, and if the reaction is negative, they can say they weren't really serious and it's everyone else who is being humorless.
Only problem with that reference is the subject from the film and book was actually serving his country at one point, where Trump literally never did that. He comes from a long line of people who avoided serving their country, going back to Germany.
They hope to poison the well enough that some Democrats will stay home, so pissed at Biden/Warren/Whoever that they ignore the very real disaster happening in this country now.
And just for the record (for all the "Abolish the EC" people), there's nothing in the Constitution that says how a state must assign its electors. Maine and Nebraska haven't been using the "winner take all" method for ages....
