New Republic: "People Aren’t Just Sick of Donald Trump—They’re Sick of His Wife, Too"

•---•---•---•---•---•---•---•---•---•---•---•---•---•---•---•---•---•---•

"Melania is the most disliked First Lady in modern history. Her solution? A new reality show coming this fall."–https://newrepublic.com/article/214264/donald-trump-melania-approval-ratings-people-sick

Seriously, who thought this was a 'good idea' after everything? At least Ivanka was savvy enough to understand how much damage she did to herself and her 'brand' through her 'service' during Trump's first term. Now she and her husband Jared do their corrupt business out of the limelight – and not for chump change and cheap ego hits.

Always Be Ithacating's avatar

The last line of that excellent piece is brutal, and rightly so!

Bezos is currying favor with Trump by giving Melania millions of $.

I really do want to be optimistic about this but I don't get my hopes up anymore. Too many of them dashed against brick walls.

I still cannot understand why in the name of all things holy, and not so holy, people have adopted the term "Democratic Socialist"

First of all, they are not by proper definition "socialists", nor are they advocating for "socialism" in any way shape or form, Common sense "Social Welfare Programs" like Social Security, SNAP, school lunches, Medicaid, etc etc, are not "socialism". These programs are funded by taxation of privately held, for profit, capitalist enterprises. They are an integral part of a regulated Capitalism and have been in place in the USA and Western European nations for nearly a century.

Just as important or perhaps more so, the word "Socialism" has strong negative connotations which are difficult if not impossible to overcome. It conjures up visions of cold, grey, bleak Eastern European countries, as well as authoritarian regimes who call themselves "socialists" in all parts of the world. The attack ads practically write themselves "Is this what you want for America? over horrible images of terrible places.

So why do it?? Why tie a weight around your neck at the beginning of a race??

Daniel's avatar

"First of all, they are not by proper definition "socialists", nor are they advocating for "socialism" in any way shape or form"

Hence the use of the adjective.

Laurian's avatar

Funny part is we 'Muricans all are socialists, have been for a century or more. Cops, schools, fire departments, roads, etc. What sets us apart is we aren't very good socialists

VaselineHabits's avatar

Exactly, I would hope some DNC spokewhore could figure out some messaging on how WE ALREADY ARE "Socialists" for certain things.

Republicans just love to tear down anything that benefits regular people. Maybe highlight that? Jesus, it shouldn't be THAT hard to get these messages across after 50+ years of HISTORY of Republicans doing so.

PrimerGray's avatar

I would frame it as "Socialism is a check on rabid capitalism". We will never be completely socialist in this country but it should be used to keep things fair for everybody, Left unchecked, a few will have all and no matter how hard you work, you will struggle, which is most unfair in a nation like ours. Hard work should be rewarded fairly, and socialism is a way to make sure that is the case.

shivaskeeper's avatar

What would you prefer and why?

PoDG follows the 92%'s avatar

New Deal Democrats. But that's just me. Even the most Fox poisoned brain still remembers New Deal=Good from their high school days.

RRJKR's avatar

Why not just Democrats?

RRJKR's avatar

Democratic policies which benefit the average American, as they have been doing since FDR.

MRK's avatar

You mean when Black people were explicitly excluded, the undoing of which has fueled the backlash leading to this fascist hellscape?

Aquaman, Real Estate Investor.'s avatar

Because change happens.

And the governments of western Europe have been calling themselves different flavors of socialist since before you were born.

The American Right desperately clings to a definition of socialism that hasn't changed in a century, while the rest of the world has moved on.

Tell voters what those "socialist" policies are and they want them.

RRJKR's avatar

The first President I remember was Harry Truman. So I don't think so. You can't give the voters and intensive poly-sci or economies education in the months leading up to an election.

"If you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao, you ain't gonna make it with anyone anyhow"

Daniel's avatar

"You can't give the voters and intensive poly-sci or economies education in the months leading up to an election."

So perhaps instead you offer them policies they would like and then let them vote for those.

Daniel's avatar

"The first President I remember was Harry Truman. So I don't think so."

There have been socialist parties in Europe since the nineteenth century.

RRJKR's avatar

Of course, but which Country has a "socialist"economic system?

Aquaman, Real Estate Investor.'s avatar

Lol.

First Labour Government in the UK?

1924.

Educate yourself.

Mao? Looooooololol.

Weak. Sauce.

Trump is literally calling all Democrats radical Stalinists, that ship sailed a decade ago.

People want candidates who are willing to fight.

"Terrible Places"

*Video of happy children playing in Norway, Sweden, Britain, France, Spain, Italy, Germany etc etc.*

RRJKR's avatar

None of which have Socialism as an economic system.

They are all regulated Capitalism. In fact. socialism has never been successful anywhere. It turns into crony capitalism run by an oligarchy .

Daniel's avatar

You didn't know that socialism as a party political movement existed prior to the Second World War.

Aquaman, Real Estate Investor.'s avatar

Oh ok, I'll got tell the British Labour Party that they are wrong and no they are not socialists.

Ditto everyone else in Europe that's used the term in any way that's changed since ~1900?

SkeptiKC's avatar

Bastardizing the rhetoric is first on the destructive list of these democratic vandals.

Thesaurus Wrecks 2547's avatar

People in this country have been indoctrinated to recoil at the very mention of the word “socialism”. Most don’t know what socialism or Democratic Socialism is.

They are giving republicans an easy lay-up.

RRJKR's avatar

Exactly! Thank You. The Midterms should be a lay down! All they have is Trump and his approvals are in the toilet across all demographics. I fear that Democrats will once more shoot themselves in the foot, and snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

MRK's avatar

Right. Because Democrats weren't going to be called socialists or communists unless they did it to themselves.

Aquaman, Real Estate Investor.'s avatar

I'm pretty sure conceding wildly popular policies that got them through a primary is just Consulting 101.

But yes, if they drop the word Socialist then Trump will stop calling them "radical socialist communists and Stalinists!"

That's just science.

We should check with James Carville, he got Bill Clinton elected you know.

PrimerGray's avatar

He got Bill Clinton elected in a year where the economy sucked and Ross Perot split the vote.

MRK's avatar

Getting the most naturally charismatic man to run for office since JFK to victory is not an achievement.

PrimerGray's avatar

I was just going to edit to include that after Reagan and Bush, the specter of another president in his late '60s wasn't appealing at the dawn of the '90s, not compared to youthful Bill.

Thesaurus Wrecks 2547's avatar

And that’s where the game changer comes in.

Fox is gonna run the same old tired scare campaign about socialists and communists.

This is the perfect opportunity for Dems to say, look, these guys have nothing but fearmongering.

Aquaman, Real Estate Investor.'s avatar

I don't understand how magically they can't do that anyway?

There's been polling, socialism is quite popular.

PrimerGray's avatar

You beat me to it. Notice they don't use "radical" or "radical liberal" anymore. Now it's "communists" because socialism isn't the trigger word for a lot of people as it used to be. They are going to define you by their terms anyway and to them, any Democrat will be the devil incarnate anyway.

freakishlystrong's avatar

Okay, since we're trying to look at the bright side. Other than removing his name and face from everything he's slapped it on, what money do we try and claw back first and who gets the first subpoena? It's fun to think about.
