Skip Goodwill. Use The Salvation Army. The Goodwill CEO makes millions and the joint is straight up a profit making organization. The CEO of The Salvation Army makes thousands and runs a true non-profit.
I love thrift store shopping, it's where 90% of the clothes I wear come from. Back in the day, I had to shop at thrift stores because I couldn't afford anything else...so, before it became hip, it was how a lot of us musician types kept ourselfs clothed. There was a big stink and some investigative journalism done on Goodwill and the shitty pay for the mentally handicapped workers maybe 15 years ago? In The Reader, I believe. Between Goodwill and the Pro-Life thrift stores, it's hard to find a decent one out here in Bumblefuck. There used to be one that supported a pet shelter, but it closed. Sigh. '
Here, they now send all the really nice and good stuff to a special store (with higher prices, natch) so the regular stores are crammed with the stuff people couldn't sell at their garage sales.
It is my experience in thrift store shopping that truly great bargains come from thrift stores in up-scale neighborhoods. Rich people donate nicer stuff that poor people. Also, old money people donate nicer stuff that new money people. When you are deciding whether to investigate a thrift store, try to guess the value of homes within 5 miles and guess how many residents had ancestors on the Mayflower.
There're a lot of online thrift stores out there. thredUP.com is probably the most well known one and is for-profit, I believe and I don't know about their labor practices.
Check out https://cascadealliance.us/... for a list of others- some of them do online sales. This is run out of St. Vincent de Paul's in Eugene ,OR and they help other nonprofit thrifts be financially self sustaining while doing all the liberal do-gooder things we like- liveable wages, environmental sustainability, employing marginalized people. Disclaimer: I worked for them for a time and was really impressed with what they are doing.
Goodwill Industries of the Redwood Empire (GIRE) in Northern California has been this way for YEARS. I used manage online sales for several stores. The entire operation is a fraud to line the board of directors pockets
Yes, it has that designation...but the executives make the majority of the money. If you look at charities to contribute to Goodwill has a horrible rating.

What a trash human being.
Did your stepson receive SSDI while doing voc rehab?
Goodwill is a for profit organization. It is actually disgusting how they have taken advantage of our impulse to both recycle goods and help people.

I believe it is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
