The young girl stirring a pot is probably stirring lye, because lye plus fat is how they made soap. Lots of people suffered burns from hot lye. The lye was created by soaking wood ashes in water. Not sure if the type of ash was significant, but soaking one's hands in lye water while washing clothes did not lead to lovely hands. I remember hearing about women losing their sight due to lye splashing.

Ta, Erik. I always learn something from your articles, always. This morning my beloved husband Meccalopolis gave me the news that my Union, 1199, has endorsed Zohran Mamdani, following in the footsteps of his, United Federation of Teachers. I am very disappointed that my Congressman, Dan Goldman, has not yet endorsed him. Solidarity forever.

Were they successful? I didn't parse that from the post. Thank you always for sharing the history of labor rights!

Many of these ladies lived in a horrible slum near downtown Atlanta. It was called Buttermilk Bottom, because it was low, flooded often, and was said to smell, as a result, like spoiled milk. That slum, in the so-called "city too busy to hate" lasted until the LBJ administration poured urban renewal money into it in 1966. Sadly, that money ended up in paying for public improvement to the neighborhood, but not affordable housing. It is now the home of The Atlanta Civic Center, the headquarters of Georgia Power and other companies, park land, shopping, and very nice townhouses. The African-American people that had been forced to live there, had to find new residences.

O/T: This could get nasty: The WGA (Writers Guild of America) is asking for an investigation into CBS cancelling Colbert over the Paramount-Skydance sale. They are not buying the "financial reasons" line:

https://www.avclub.com/writers-guild-late-show-staff-respond-colbert?

Elderly John's avatar

Some people may not watch the 11:35 pm shows, but they do watch the earlier shows and the news programs, and the Writers Guild may have an impact there. Most shows have several episodes "in the can" but actors may honor a strike by the Writers and future episodes may not see the light of day.

I really like the idea of the NY AG taking an interest in the CBS bribe demanded by Trump. Let's see what happens with his multi-billion suit against Murdoch.

Miss Grundy's avatar

I mostly watch Colbert on his YouTube channel because I'm streaming something else while his show is broadcasting. He has more than enough money if he wants to retire but I really hope he goes somewhere where he will have his own production company making his show, his way and I hope he makes the Manchurian Cantaloupe complain even louder.

Marty Smit's avatar

People may not watch the TV show, but YouTube views are probably where younger people, or old

Old Man Yells at Cloud's avatar

I don't know if it is true, but I saw a claim that Colbert is the most watched of the late night shows. If that is true and unless he charges way more than the other hosts, any claim of it being about money is simply not believable. And CBS already having caved once to Orange Turd once makes nothing management says believable.

kmblue187's avatar

About Stephen most watched, it's true.

Miss Grundy's avatar

YouTube is also where you can catch up on your favorite show that shows sequences or to re-watch a favorite interview, etc.

I really hope that the executive or executives that made this decision find themselves out on the street when CBS loses money because they lose viewership with their other programs. Broadcast networks still depend on Nielsen ratings in order to charge for ads on their shows.

ElderlyLoudCatWomyn's avatar

Thanks for another great article. I've never heard of this strike - it's always good to hear about working people, particularly Black women, fighting for better wages and conditions.

It always amazes me how White upper classes, but especially men, focus on adjectives for working women that include words like docile, compliant, passive, obedient, ... . These "feminine" qualities are nothing more than propaganda aimed at dominating women.

Pedophilia scandals never age, have you ever noticed that?

Always Be Ithacating's avatar

The scandals may age, but shocking proportions of the accused go unpunished, and only a fool would believe that those men are all innocent.

Don't get me started on the Roman Catholic church, or Evangelical church leaders, or the power subcultures that protect the likes of Anthony Weiner, Matt Gaetz, and Roy Moore.

So I think that an AI wrote this. Any Tom Waits stans want to offer an opinion?

"Synonymous with the soulful undercurrents of San Diego’s music scene, Tom Waits stands as a towering figure in the city’s artistic tapestry. His gravelly voice and poignant lyrics echo the diverse and rich cultural landscape of San Diego, reflecting its hidden depths and stories."

IMO, Tom Waits' soul is born out of run-down midwestern hotels and seedy bus stations, not San DIego.

Great performance and interview on Letterman in 1982 – the same year CBS canceled the "Lou Grant" show because of Ed Asner's polticial activism.

This aired the year after I graduated from high school. I remembered the Smothers Brothers from seeing some of their shows when I was just a wee school girl back in the mid sixties.

Even as a kid I I "got" it.

Notorious J.I.M.'s avatar

My parents watched that too, as well as the Viet Nam war on the Evening News.

As a little girl (like 5, 6, 7) I *loved* Lou Grant. On "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," "Lou Grant," etc. I don't even know why. I think I could sense his kindness and compassion.

Some drunken idiot drove through a crowd of people in Hollywood early this morning, injuring 30.

The uninjured bystanders dragged him out of his SUV, beat the hell out of him and shot him.

People sound tense.

Seek's avatar

Don’t be silly. Everyone knows CA is full of fruits and nuts who are too stoned and dumb to be violent. Just ask the Nightstalker how he felt after he was “detained” by concerned citizens.

I’m pretty surprised he was shot. That seems out of character but I suspect more people are wandering around armed because of the nonsense with ICE and DHS.

I may be a drunken idiot, but at least I'm not THAT drunken idiot.

But the bullets I'm not okay with. These fucking ghost guns have GOT to gawd damned go, along with all of the rest of the damned things.

Tourists visiting America:

*Hand over your social media

*At risk of being detained, imprisoned and deported for the vaguest of reasons

*Now being asked to pay $250 for the privilege

Intl tourists contribute more than $200B to the US economy. But lets fix that problem!

Miss Grundy's avatar

Comemierda didn't drive the economy enough into a ditch during his first administration he is now going to do it in the second and make this country a pariah. Good job, voters!!

Aquaman, Real Estate Investor.'s avatar

Ok.

So first problem.

This is for the DHS to collect an additional $250 fee on non-immigrant visas.

One minor problem. DHS has nothing to do with visas. That's the State Department.

So how are they supposed to collect? Also, I imagine this will be challenged in court as again, DHS has nothing to do with visas.

Ambiance Chaser's avatar

"Ok, dammit, Mastercard, you happy now ?" . . .

TerseNurse's avatar

well, apparently they *accept* visas.

Aquaman, Real Estate Investor.'s avatar

They can also cancel them.

But they don't issue them or handle the applications.

um, I wasn't talking about that kind of visa...

When I renewed my passport in 2016, I test drove it (it had expired) by crossing into Canada the weekend the Cubs were in the World Series. I thought about wearing the shirt in the passport photo, and decided that might be pushing it.

It took 90 minutes to clear Canadian Immigration as it was.
