I learned about this in Manchester's The Glory and the Dream-- it's the first story in vol. 1 of 2 volumes. It's a super readable pair of books, I promise, because I'm no super-scholar. It makes you understand how much work has gone into this place. And how there've always been a few extreme cruel lame-brain time- wasting right wingers. But never so many at once, like now.

Ha ha I mentioned this to my GOP military father once. He said, "Dahling, those bonuses weren't due yet. But, Dad, I said, their families were starving, or they wouldn't have walked all that way and asked for them. Because they knew they weren't due.

He had nothing to add.

A reaction from socially conscious Warner Brothers. The 11 o'clock number from Gold Diggers of 1933 includes a scene of a sex worker (Joan Blondell) shaming a ocp out of beating up a homeless veteran.

Very cool article. Thank you! Weren’t there 48 states in 1932, so 96 Senators?

Mahousu's avatar

Yes, looks like there was a typo in the article. The actual margin in the Senate was 62-18.

1924? That was when the US Army had finally completed it's goal of subduing the Native population*. So, they were spinning their wheels for a bit till they could find a new target. As they now relied on black Americans to actually be in the military, it made sense to focus on the poor.

Still only wanted Black in the military for the dirtiest, most dangerous jobs, see the Port Chicago "Mutiny" that followed the Port Chicago disaster...

Just a reminder: Coolidge was Ronald Reagan's favorite president. Thanks Prof Loomis, I was already familiar with the tale, but gosh, all the detail!

MacArthur disobeyed orders? Aw, say it ain't so! He would never...

MacArthur was the perfect example of a martinet.

I loved this piece and only looked up the Senate vote (which was 62–18 according to wikipedia, not 82-18) because I was baffled by there being 100 senators in 1932 🤓

there are already 300+ comments so this has probably been covered. Thanks for the article (and now the Hooverville number from Annie is stuck in my head)!

WWI was where "shell-shock" (PTSD) was invented, pretty much, right? I remember reading "All Quiet on the Western Front" when I was a yoot, & it was quite devastating.

WWI made Vietnam look like a walk in the park.

And for the few who don't know, Smedley Butler (whose birthday is tomorrow, btw) went on to save the US from a coup.

We live near a wonderful place, the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Museum.

Sterling was an heir to the Singer sewing machine fortune and bought tons of great Impressionist works in the early part of the last century.

It is a world class museum tucked away in the northwest corner of Massachusetts. I am severely conflicted about this because it is a great place but old fucking Sterling was key to that coup and thank the FSM that Smedley dropped a dime on them.

Just how fucking stupid were these assholes thinking that Gen. Butler would agree with them and be the guy to rally the troops to aid in their treachery?

Oblio's Cap's avatar

He also wrote "War is a Racket," which told some unpleasant truths about American Imperialism.

Gotta love those who tout free market capitalism except when it works against them. Then, it's Cancel Culture.

Jaysus callous culture-shocking cripes. Those already anchorless individuals will be completely overwhelmed and disoriented. It's equivalent to sending them to the damned moon.

OT of course. This was an exchange in the press room recently.

“You talked about how the Secret Service has treated these biting incidents as ‘workplace incidents,’ she continued. “A statement went on to say that the President and First Lady are grateful to the Secret Service and the staff for keeping the family safe.”

“But what we didn’t hear yesterday was any statement of contrition or an apology or — you know, that they’re mortified or regret that Commander has been behaving like this.”

I’m guessing that if the Bidens apologize the next time she will ask “The Bidens have apologized but why hasn’t the dog. Does he feel any contrition?”

Impeach!!

Larry Schmitt's avatar

Maybe they already talked privately with the Secret Service agents. (We need a way to abbreviate Secret Service without using SS. For obvious reasons.)

"SecServ" doesn't work especially well, either.

Okay, I just saw the email about Wonkette subscriptions, and if my dad were still alive, he'd love this place.

But, I'd immediately have stop non commenting.

ShrillKitty's avatar

Yeah, I don't want any of my relatives around my opinions on dicks, politics, or exotic cheeses

SkeptiKC's avatar

I have invited our adult granddaughter to check out Wonkette. While I don't see her joining our chatty lot here in comments I know that our precocious little tattoo artist will appreciate the content enormously. She's a a gay college student; there's a great deal here that she'll find both informative and incredibly supportive.

And she already knows that Granny KC is an educated woman with the vocabulary of a sailor.

kareema's avatar

I, having worked with a LOT of.... interesting people, also have an extensive vocabulary. Sorry/not sorry.

My mom would be OK with this place and anything I say.

So would my dad (if he were still alive).
