Last year, when Gavin Newsom came out with a few really good comments about Trump and trumpism, I sent him a little donation, thinking maybe he would be a good person to run in 2028. Ever since then, he has gone down and down and down in my estimation until he reminds me not even of John Edwards, North Carolina's half-ass Senate candidate of 20 years ago, but of Hakeem Jeffries. It seems all he gets a hard-on for is the thought of being a handsome president, and the moment he got into the White House would sell out to whoever offered him the most power, opportunities, or threats. What a pathetic loser!

How it is that any successful politician can still listen to the hired worm tongues, marplots all, when their advice always contradicts their own experience, counseling timidity when success comes from boldness. It is no secret that the electorate wearies of leaders who won't lead, of candidates who have no clear convictions. It has gotten so bad that it hardly matters what those convictions may be, as long as they seem strong. How can you hope to lead without at least the appearance of the courage of your convictions?
Oh that's right: children can't vote. Nor do they usually have loads of $$$$$$$ to make political donations to candidates.
Governor Goodhair better fix this situation or he'll find it smearing him should he run for something important later. Yeah you're a democrat, BUT YOU SHOULD DO BETTER.

Great column! This heat problem in the classroom could permanently impact the health of the children, especially if they already have fragile health or disabilities. But fuck the next generation, the Governor wants to play toesies with PGE.
The bullshit on balcony solar systems not being safe is just that. Who here thinks GERMANY has less restrictive safety regulations than we do? The worst that is likely is that companies selling them here are trying to come in cheap so they can make bank. But the technology when implemented right is perfectly safe.
Believe me. If CA transitions to Solar you can bet your bottom dollar that PG&E and ConEdison will still charge you bank. PG&E already has a charge on your bill for solar, even though we don’t have solar. It’s a monthly fee for bullshit. And our energy costs keep going up while PG&E keeps pissing on us and telling it’s raining by saying they’ve lowered prices. Ours has gone up three times what it used to be last year.
PG&E has already mucked up the balcony solar bill. The allure of plug-in solar is no need for permits or permission from the utilities, but they forced in a poison pill requiring utility permission beginning in 2030.
I already have rooftop solar. If Newsom does sign the bill, I'll get a panel or two to supplement what I have. Summers are brutal, and the A/C runs 24/7 for months. I can't keep up with production.
Ta, Brooke. I have tremendous sympathy for the school kids in CA. I cannot imagine trying to learn in the sweltering heat. Public school teachers are heroes; I married one.
Here in the cool, (usually) wet Catskills, we installed a heat pump while it still qualified for a tax credit (thanks, Joe Biden). We use it to warm the place, but on those rare occasions last summer when it got too hot in here, we got to use it as an air conditioner. After we insulate the weather side of the house and make another entrance to what's going to be our mudroom-laundry room-pantry, we'll put in another. They work amazingly well. Next improvement after that will be rooftop solar and a small wind turbine farther up the mountain on our property, and battery storage.
I have a heat pump mini-split. It's a little too small for what I need it to do, but what can I say, I'm one of those filthy poors and the size I needed was three times the price. I have a wood stove for heat, but no alternative for summer. This part of California used to be pretty arid and swamp coolers were sufficient. Now that monsoon season hangs around from June to October, not so much.
It sucks and I get so mad about it! I took am a Filthy Poor and have the one "Cold Room" with the AC unit. I would love to heat pump the shit out of the room with the TV!

There was very little chance I was going to support Newsome in the '28 primary. That faint glimmer has been officially snuffed out.
