I am an ignorant dude from Australia and even I worked out that cotton pickin was a racist term before I left high school. And we didn't have slave cotton plantations here, just convicts, lots of convicts.Dudes racism is so deeply ingrained that he really saw nothing wrong with what he said.

Just comes back to the parable of the Fox and the Snake/Scorpion swimming the river.Like a dumb animal, it is just his nature to be racist AF.

I heard it a lot, though maybe only from my father. He lurves him some puns, and he lurves the phrase "keep your cotton-pickin' hands off of my gin". His family was astonishingly non-racist for their time and place. It never occurred to me to even think about it having a deeper meaning until this, but then it was obvious.

As for GGY's "He knew exactly what he was saying" - I doubt it. I suspect it was totally subconscious. He's racist to the core, and while bitching at a black man, that was the term that came to his mind. What words people use when they aren't thinking about their words says a lot about them.

Wanna hear an old 'BeBest'? Use 'pea-pickin' instead, as in the close of Tennessee Ernie Ford's old show, when he'd say, "...and bless your pea-pickin' hearts" to his audience - which was anyone, black or white, who had a black and white TV.

Yeah it's sad. My older southern relatives had some pretty colorful expressions and turns of phrase. I never appreciated it until now, when we're all sort of speaking the same urban dialect.

Same here, growing up in NC. The racism was a lot less subtle in the days of my youth. No need for dog whistles, because..... well who would you be trying to clean it up for, anyway?

But point is "cotton picking mind" or "wait a cotton picking moment" was just part of the regular vernacular. For what it's worth, some of my ancestors were those poor white sharecroppers you're talking about.

edit to add: Agree w/ nightmoth that Bossie was coming from a different place.
