The funny thing is they HAVE read it, but they cherry pick and interpret it a specific way but INSIST that they're not interpreting it, just reading what's clearly there. Becuase if you admit you have an interpretation, you have to admit you might be wrong. You can read just about anything to fit your world view rather than having it change your world view.
After reading about this, it is easy to understand how the Nazis were able to staff concentration camps. There are always people willing to take orders from the rich and powerful that lead them to victimize vulnerable people. Such people do not even demand decent pay or respect from their superiors, let alone their neighbors. They simply take joy in victimizing other people, particularly those who are vulnerable and can't fight back.
I would note that we have occasionally also managed to deport U.S. citizens with mental disabilities, so it's not a surprise (if still incredibly sickening) that this is happening.
