So, DeSantis does "pragmatic things that affected their lives". That's good. Biden wants to do pragmatic things that affect people's lives. That's bad. I has a confuse.Fuck Stephanie Murphy.

That's the man I couldn't be arsed to look up his name. Medical boards are going to become meaningless unless they move to stop all these nonsense peddlers.

That might come as a surprise to those who identify as, or tend to vote for, Democrats: https://www.pewresearch.org...

You'll have to scroll down about three-quarters of the way to get to "Majority of Republicans say socialism restricts people's freedoms; many Democrats say it ensures people's needs are met" to see how popular "socialism" really is among Democrats.

Before you get there (about one quarter down), you might want to stop and look at "Demographic differences in views of socialism and capitalism". It's no coincidence that the demographics with positive opinions of socialism--Blacks, Asians, Hispanics; 18-29, 30-49 year olds; the highest educated and lowest incomes--are the same demographics the DP has been alienating for decades with their embrace of corporate donors and neo-liberal economics.

Back in 1989, when the US allegedly won the Cold War (by five minutes and dollars, if that), the trope was that the class war between capital and labor was over, and vulture capitalism won (as per Francis Fukuyama's 1992 book "The End of History"). The reality was, the class war simply moved to the mopping up stage of scouring the planet for markets to capture, wage-slave workers to exploit, resources to plunder, and unions to bust. Of course the GOP is responsible for this; but their success was aided, abetted and enabled by New Dem/Blue Dog/Third Way/DLC Democrats (Clinton, Obama, Biden) every step of the way.

You don't normally praise people for accomplishing something bad. This is akin to praising Mussolini for making the trains run on time.

I don't think the word "socialism" means the same thing to Republicans as it does to a dictionary.

It is also important to note that socialism and capitalism are not mutually exclusive. In most countries, some things are capitalistic (unless rich losers get bailed out, which is welfare) and some are socialized. That makes sense.

I just read what I think makes more sense than any of the explanations offered so far, and it explained a bit of the history and context for the evolution of the terms, because they are slightly different here in the US.

Fiscal Liberalism: Defined by policies that prioritize government interventions to solve problems. A general williningness to use taxation and market interventions to promote social welfare. Political examples: Frank Lautenberg, Sheldon Whitehouse, Diane FiensteinFiscal Conservatism: Defined by a reluctance to spend money on social programming and a desire to leave many issues to the free market to resolve. Examples: Rand Paul, Paul RyanSocial Liberalism: Promoters of policies designed to solve issues of inequality or promote moral causes generally outside of a "traditional" religious context. Examples: Al Franken, Barney Frank, Barack ObamaSocial Conservatism: Promoters of policies that enforce a return to traditional Judeo-Christian values. Examples: Lindsey Graham, George W. Bush, Rick Santorum
