Edit: Also, fuck Media Guide. We are not Buddists but when my eldest had anger issues stemming from being bullied at school, you are damn right I taught him some zen like coping mechanisms. I had to learn them my self and had a tough time all through HS- I got to teach them how to cope with the stress early on.

Nice. That sounds like something Mom would think but not say.

It just looks like a really fun movie and my wife and I are looking forward to watching it. Should have some time next weekend. Neither of us are Asian Canadians (I'm from the US and she's Japanese), but I predict we will have no issues whatsoever with this film.

It was a very sweet movie, and tbh as an Olde White Lady, the scenes with her mother calling out that she had started her period absolutely brought back memories of my Italian mother doing the exact same thing. It was mortifying then and now is a laughable memory---but hell yeah, it resonated.

Thanks for the reminder of Movie Guide: their "reviews" through a Talibangelical lens are a hood, and I haven't been to their site in a long time.

I hadn't heard of Movie Guide before this article, and based on what SER wrote about them, I'm glad to keep it that way.

"No, it’s not racist to have a limited artistic palette, but what’s damnable is a refusal to concede that this is your own limitation"Exactly. Everyone has biases and limitations, just like they have strengths and areas of expertise. Refusing to acknowledge that you have limitations and carrying on as if it is the responsibility of the rest of the world to accommodate yours instead of just recognizing when something isn't for you and stepping aside: that's what makes you an asshole. And it's not the exclusive province of straight white cis men, but they are wildly over-represented in the population of people who assume that they are fully realized universal subjects without bias, limitation, inexperience, or other limiting factors affecting their ability to connect with and (failing that, because art doesn't actually require your to "connect" with it, get over yourselves) appreciate works from a different perspective.

Nah, it hysterical. For example, a review of The Tragedy of Macbeth -- a 2021 adaptation of the Shakespeare play that follows the original script pretty closely -- is given a -3 rating because of "excessive sex, violence, immorality, and/or worldview problems" with the last one having to do with supernatural elements and suicide. It makes me wonder how they would review that gorgeous 1999 adaptation of Shakespeare's most gruesome tragedy, Titus Andronicus, which starred Anthony Hopkins.

I loved this movie. As a 50 year old black woman what I love most about it is the fact that it is from the perspective of a 13 year old Chinese Canadian girl. The fact that her friend group is so diverse is amazing. I love seeing other cultures represented on screen. Don't people get tired of seeing the same homogeneous stories again and again?
