When Daddy passed away in May, I called AAA to cancel his membership and to get a refund for the balance of the year. That was not a problem, but the lady I spoke was good at sales, and talked me into getting a membership of my own. That the price was discounted helped, and I've used it to get discounts from restaurants, but yesterday I needed it for it's primary purpose - my car wouldn't start. I was leaving my brother's nursing home, and the battery was dead. So I called AAA, and they sent someone out to check it, and I was right, it was dead (at least it was just the battery), and he replaced it. I did have to wait because he had a call to help another lady, who had run out of gas on the interstate. At least I was in a safe place, and it was a nice day, and I got to visit with my brother some more.
I had let it lapse to save money, and was lucky. Yesterday proved that it is a must. I was thankful that I had it, so won’t let it lapse again, because in the end, you don’t save money.
I let mine lapse a few times when I bought new trucks that came with roadside assistance for the entire warranty period. The only thing that stings is losing the "Member since..." cred.
Mourn, accept, adjust, and then spent the next months to years being reminded by the smallest things that the most normal people in the world have it in them to do such things.
If all the major universities with resources to fight this joined forces, smaller, poorer universities might join them.
Also, universities should remember that the world is much larger than the US. Many already have overseas campuses to try to cash in on overseas students. They could expand those at the graduate and research level, ultimately move a good chunk of their research overseas, Europe, Canada, Japan Australia, Mexico, Brazil. Try to get new research funding from those places. They need to imagine their institutional future in a 100-year, global perpective, accounting for a century-long struggle hetween 21st century authoritarianism and democratic forces.
But first they need to fight, in court and in the court of public opinion. And they need to do it together.
In fact they should make common cause with other private sector institutions under attack, law firms, corporations, service providers like PP, non-profits like ACLU.

The trump admin thinks colleges should be trade schools. So this makes perfect sense.

Zero concept of why a diverse student body is critically important to education.
Pfffft.
If all the major universities with resources to fight this joined forces, smaller, poorer universities might join them.
Also, universities should remember that the world is much larger than the US. Many already have overseas campuses to try to cash in on overseas students. They could expand those at the graduate and research level, ultimately move a good chunk of their research overseas, Europe, Canada, Japan Australia, Mexico, Brazil. Try to get new research funding from those places. They need to imagine their institutional future in a 100-year, global perpective, accounting for a century-long struggle hetween 21st century authoritarianism and democratic forces.
But first they need to fight, in court and in the court of public opinion. And they need to do it together.
In fact they should make common cause with other private sector institutions under attack, law firms, corporations, service providers like PP, non-profits like ACLU.
