It managed to paint her sympathetically while also revealing some pretty damning thing (though none of them a surprise): that she showed up to mentor low-income students in suits worth thousands of dollars instead of jeans; that she had a driver wait for her instead of parking an expensive car in the lot; that she took both of the girls profiled in the story out of the public school and put them in private Christian schools, which the teachers from that public school found insulting.
Ultimately, while she was very generous to her mentees and their families, it left me with two feelings: 1) grossed out with how enmeshed she made these people with her personally (she hired the mother of one girl working for her to run her laundry, and the girl herself was cleaning Betsy's house, under such strict orders not to move anything that she had to photograph items before cleaning them so as to put them back in the right place); 2) wondering about all the families she didn't help, and realizing that kind of charity just doesn't scale.
She might mean well, but her solutions are the solutions of a clueless rich white lady who spent five years volunteering as a mentor to a few kids and now thinks she's some kind of expert in education. It's notable that she calls her time as a volunteer "work".
