Donald Trump, it seems, is having a very hard time fully comprehending why all of the sports men are taking a knee during the national anthem. He seems to think it is because they hate the flag or because they hate the national anthem (to be fair, it is a bad song), or because they hate him, or because they hate all the veterans who died so that all Americans could be compelled to salute the flag and stand during the national anthem.
He grew up in East Chicago. It's a bit different from, say Crown Point or St. John, which (I suspect) are full of white hoods based on my Facebook feeds.
Government handouts are a well-known rocket boost to the 95 yard line and they are paid for ENTIRELY by white people who might maybe grudgingly admit to being on the ten.
There was a little piece on NPR yesterday on whether or not healthcare should be seen as a right. They went & talked to people in rural Athens Co., OH (which has some liberal hotspots and grows a lot of weed, but is otherwise pretty red afaik). These folks overwhelmingly said NO for reasons discussed in the piece; but one of them was this idea that they are struggling (as they are) while OTHERS are getting Entitlements off the honest sweat of *their* brows.
I can pretty well guaran-effing-tee these folks don't see themselves as privileged in the least (and compared to us city folk, they aren't). So how do we simultaneously clarify to them that POC are just like them *with additional handicap* AND that their economic pain is also real and valid?
Not only that, but they're told by the right wing media that people of color are getting free food, free housing, free medical care, and free college, and half of them still don't realize that welfare went away 20 years ago.
How on earth is Tinyhands McOrangeface going to comprehend white privilege? He can't even wrap his head around the fact that he was born into money. Probably the reason he seems like an idiot is that 75% of his brain is constantly trying to forget that if he had just put his daddy's money in the bank, he wouldn't be in this whole mess with Putin and the presidency.
IF they're not already too angry and propaganda-excited to listen at all, ask them to imagine starting out exactly where they started out -- but also being black. For the ordinary person, it's not so much about white being 'priveleged' but about color adding additional layers of the opposite of privelege.
That can help make sense out of 'affirmative action' not as adding privelege (how many whites see it) but as removing additional disadvantage.
Not wanting to affront anyone, but to some extent the idea of 'white privelege' is a distorted way to talk about the disadvantaging of color, expecially when the whites in question are low status, low education, low income, etc. It is unintentionally, and sometimes intentionally (politics of confrontation and 'white devil' propaganda?) divisive where reciprocal understanding would probably be more useful.
Whoa! This guy pulls none of his punches -- 'Martin Luther King should have marched across a different bridge' 'we use that flag to sell mattresses and beer' 'the self-proclaimed patriots who are simply hypocrites' -- saying this in deep Trump country. His station will be getting 'Fire him!' calls. Goodness protect him.

I don't envision an NBA expansion into the state of Alabama. Ever.
Enjoy your family vacation, Robyn.

Have you been reading Noam Chomsky again?
emojis.
America.
So is Trump going to demand he is fired?

It needs saying a lot -- the only people who think talking about racism is racist are the racists themselves.
Enjoy your time in RI, Robyn. You could go to Benny's one last time maybe.

It's not like they make boats for this sort of thing, you know. http://navaltoday.com/wp-co...
