Jesus Christ, I don't know how you guys do it. It's exhausting enough to read.

I think the migrant lifestyle started ebbing when hunter-gatherers gave way to farmers. A lot of professions require staying in one place.

Freedom of movement may be overrated if you are in poverty. These people lack the resources for movement.

Sadly, the migrant lifestyle is likely to become more common. It is often caused by resources giving out or war or both. Climate change is going to cause a lot more of that. The current migrant caravan heading here from South America is an example.

We are going to be in more need of the safety net than ever. I wish it existed for everyone in dire need.

That would likely be a further reason the migrant lifestyle is largely extinct. When few people enjoyed or expected a long term "safety net", there was no reason not to at least have freedom of movement. Now, even homeless people usually stay where there are social services at hand.

So many. Only Donald Trump Jr knows for sure.

The cash system would work well temporarily, but would have no provision for future security. The wages aren't high enough to save much. The work is exhausting. Migrant laborers don't qualify for most social programs, including SS.

It's a better system for Americans who want cheap produce than it is for the people doing the hard work. We need to do better.

The cash system would have worked for those who were migrant laborers in the most literal sense, doing local piecework and odd jobs for a few weeks and then moving on. Prob'ly stamped out by minimum wage laws and industrial agribusiness long ago.

It depends on whether you believe each "ficton*" to be a dimension.

As many as we can imagine. There is no limit to theoretical dimensions.

Also funny how the deficit is a problem only when a Dem is President.

The Repubs are setting us up for a massive recession, which they will use to claim that SS, Medicare and Medicaid have to be cut because the deficit is too high.

Economics 101 says the feds should balance the budget when the economy is normal, spend extra when we're in recession, and pay down the deficit when the economy is hot. The Repubs do the opposite.

There is almost no evidence of in-person voter fraud. The big risk is in the people and the machines that do the counting. Which is why the Repubs focus on in-person voter fraud.

Thanks for the information. If we could get a real populist wave going--preferably in both parties, since most people are sick of government owned by special interests--we could get the Congress you envision.

But it won't be in the near future.

I've heard occasional anecdotes, usually about immigrants using someone else's number. I suspect employers who know their employees are undocumented use the cash system.

If immigrants pay in on someone else's number it seems they would never be able to collect the SS they pay for. That's actually a good deal for SS--just bad for immigrants.

They are both, of course, just as Mexican immigrants are lazy bums who come here to steal all our jobs.

They are the Wonderland party:"Alice laughed: "There's no use trying," she said; "one can't believe impossible things." "I daresay you haven't had much practice," said the Queen. "When I was younger, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast."from Alice in Wonderland

Dems talk about these things, but too many voters don't listen. The (so-called) 'liberal' media would only talk about emails, a non-issue. Hillary had a web page with all kinds of details about all kinds of real issues. The media seldom talked about them.

We need better media and better voters. It's part of being good citizens in a democracy.
