A nice and easy explanation of sanctions would be using a childs life as a basis. Like, if you misbehave, you may get TV or computer privileges revoked until you apologize and behave. Sanctions is like that for countries, only they don`t get to do things like trade instead of TV and games.

If our media was worth a whit this is exactly what they'd do with these people. Rake them hard over pushing something so dishonest--hard enough that they publicly apologize and promise to be more careful in the future. Instead, our media lets it slide, so there's no downside to this.
