Typically I'd fly into Milwaukee and drive to the show. Always stopped in East Madison on the way to the show for lunch at a Chinese buffet, a stop at the Penzey's store, a browse through the used book shop, and a stop to see what was in the camera store.
Last time I was there, I had a loooong time between leaving the show and catching the plane, so I stopped at the Machine Shed in Pewaukee. "When in Iowa or Wisconsin, eat pig." It was the best pork chop I've ever eaten at a restaurant. Damn.
I went to a wedding at at the Pizza Ranch, which is one of the more "luxurious" venues in the area. And yes... Marley's. Very popular with white kids that want the "spring break" experience without having to leave their protective bubble. Tara Reid partied there once, which was very big news. I'm pretty sure locals are still talking about it. At least you didn't have to eat at "Nig's," which is the very real name of a very real place that terrifies me down to my very soul. There was once a great vegetarian restaurant in the area run by a cult (seriously!), but it closed because the tourists were confused by the vegetarian thing. It looked like a 1950's soda fountain, had excellent farm-to-table food, and an incredible bakery with the best cake I ever had. Lynchian vibe. Once that place shut down, there's really nothing left in terms of quality food until you get to Madison.
Note how Tony Hovator (sp?) in that NYT article said he was "tired of voting", and “At this rate I’m sure the presidential candidate they’ll put up in a few cycles will be an overweight, black, crippled dyke with dyslexia.”
I'd be overjoyed to vote for a black lesbian. I'd be soo happy to see a woman as president, and black and gay would just be like icing on the cake.
I saw some say that in addition to being a motorcycle photographer and parent of one of the students, he also taught history at the school. If that is correct, those kids are beyond fucked. the notice on his website reads as something Trump would write in his sleep, barely coherent and off the charts bonkers.
That wasn't a "wave", take a look at the kid in the first row, 5th from the left. His right hand is making the "OK" symbol of white supremacists. It's clearly shown in the photo. Oh, and the note that the "administrator" couldn't do anything because of "free speech" is totally full of shit. I spent 9 years on a school board and that excuse doesn't hold water nor is there any actual case law to support it. Disruptive, racist behavior doesn't have to be tolerated. In this case it's very plain that the administration largely agrees with it. This is an absolute dumpster fire excuse for a school that should make everyone in that district totally ashamed. The photographer sounds like a total asshole too. For good measure every kid that put him arm up or a "OK" on the down low I wish you the most profound life of underemployment possible. May all your hate come back at you 1,000 times over.
I'd like to take this opportunity to point out that 6500 people in the 1st District of Wisconsin voted for Paul Nehlen long after he came out as a neo-Nazi.
Being from Wisconsin, I can tell you this totally squares with what I know about Baraboo and rural Wisconsin in general. Not all farm folks are like this, but damn, a LOT are. It's why we ended up with Scott Walker for 8 long years...

To the true Northern Wisconsiner, anything south of Hwy 8 is southern Wisconsin, and anything south of Hwy 10 is Illinois.
Anything north or west of Walworth county is Northern Wisconsin.
