Jobs attracted thousands of Haitians to Springfield, and employers were ecstatic. But then an immigrant driver was involved in a fatal school bus crash. And JD Vance entered the fray...

In a speech at the National Conservatism Conference in July, he described Springfield as a town that was nearly a carbon copy of Middletown, where he grew up, except that it had now been “overwhelmed” by Haitians who were pushing up housing costs and collecting benefits.

“And you don’t have to believe, of course, that the 20,000, at least most of the 20,000 newcomers, are bad people” to recognize it as a problem, he said.

By most accounts, the Haitians have helped revitalize Springfield.

They are assembling car engines at Honda, running vegetable-packing machines at Dole and loading boxes at distribution centers. They are paying taxes on their wages and spending money at Walmart. On Sundays they gather at churches for boisterous, joyful services in Haitian Creole.

But the speed and volume of arrivals have put pressure on housing, schools and hospitals. The community health clinic saw a 13-fold increase in Haitian patients between 2021 and 2023, from 115 to 1,500, overwhelming its staff and budget.

The bus crash, which killed Aiden Clark, the son of two teachers, touched off resentment that had been building for months or longer, many residents said...

The accident that inflamed tensions happened last Aug. 22, when the school bus, carrying 52 students, lumbered down Route 41 outside of town. A 2010 Honda Odyssey moving in the opposite direction jumped across the center divider and into the bus’s path...

A lawyer for the minivan driver, Hermanio Joseph, 36, said at his trial in April that the sun had blinded him. Mr. Joseph, who has a spouse and four children in Haiti, had been living in Springfield for more than a year, working at a warehouse.

Police officers found no evidence of drug or alcohol consumption. But Mr. Joseph was convicted of involuntary manslaughter, and he could spend nine years behind bars.

The tragedy shook Springfield residents, and it emboldened many who crowded the first City Commission meeting after the accident to air long-held suspicions and grievances about the newcomers in their midst.

In the year since the crash, hostility toward the Haitians has only intensified, with speakers at more recent commission meetings talking about an “invasion,” a description that has become a staple of right-wing immigration rhetoric...

No evidence of drug or alcohol consumption doesn't mean he didn't do anything to cause the crash.

In fact, turns out he crossed the median into oncoming traffic. https://spectrumnews1.com/oh/columbus/news/2024/05/01/jury-finds-man-guilty-in-fatal-school-bus-crash

I'd say if you do that, you can't plausibly claim you didn't do anything to cause the crash.

None of this should be taken as a reflection on immigrants, or Haitians, or Haitian immigrants -- but he 100% caused the crash.

I've just gotten angry over a twitter thread about a guy replacing a curved staircase in his house with a straight one.

I value aesthetics as much as the next person but seeing only one person out of a hundred bring up the issue of mobility and accessibility just kills me.

(One of the most horrible things about spiral staircases is the handrail not going all the way to the bottom. Look it might be only two steps but some people need to hold on to something to go down those two steps).

Expand full comment

I did not know that. Also assume a straight one will be easier for a lift or other mobility assistant.

Idk how I feel about spirals, having never had one. I'd probably tire of it after a time I imagine, with the going around in a circle thing. They're neat to see, in certain situations, like some old castle library or converted barn or a cool mod loft thing. But I always feel they look weird in a tradition home. Like they're trying too hard to be special XD Still, less floor print, so that might be something to consider in a tight space situation.

Expand full comment

For clarification, I'm upset about the people hating straight staircases for purely aesthetic reasons.

Spiral staircases are beautiful but yeah, for people who have trouble with stairs, they can be dangerous. It's not just the circle thing, it's also the fact that the steps are often too wide on one end and too narrow on the other. It's easier to adjust to straight steps.

Expand full comment

Wait. They do not think straight staircases are aesthetic, or just not AS aesthetic?

Cause I have seen some gorgeous straight guys also in my time XD I have a special love of the ones that turn with a nice fat landing near a window. Couple that with some finely turned doohickies on the railing and voila, a gorgeous spot.

Though I always think the window ought to be stained glass, but that is just a weird thing I have for stained glass

Expand full comment

I guess in this specific example, people thought the straight staircase was not as aesthetic as the curved one.

The guy in the video chose a more modern look but honestly, the new staircase looked fine.

So I take a few civil cases a year. Two or three, usually some kind of licensing or administrative thing. It's usually a pretty simple matter of getting OSHA or some state regulator to agree to some remedial action.

But occasionally -- thrice, now -- it has involved copyright infringement actions against bars by BMI. BMI(ASCAP, too) does not fuck around. Sure, they'll send 30 or 40 letters before they get serious, but once they're serious enough for you to hire a lawyer, it's too late. You are fucked.

If you want to play music in your bar, just pay them. I don't know how they find people, but they do, even in small towns. Their investigators are top notch, and their lawyers are even better.

Expand full comment

So is the ass campaign covered by having a license, according to an article I read about the Foo Fighters? (Who are donating proceeds to Our Team K campaign)

Expand full comment

My understanding, FWIW, is that political campaigns can license through a PRO like BMI or ASCAP, but that individual artists can withdraw their consent to use.

Expand full comment

They (BMI & ASCAP) have been fighting infringement for decades, so I suspect they have a lot of practice. Even the kid's little video songs/tunes are licensed.

Expand full comment

Artists deserve to get paid. BMI and ASCAP are fucking relentless about making sure they do. Good on them.

I wonder if they are just cruising liquor license lists for non-payers and then dropping by to check it out?

It is how I would do it, but I am VERY lazy XD Should be an easy thing to compare what places have licenses versus your list of who is paying up.

Then you just go have a drink and see if they are doing music.
