Last night, I opted to sleep without my stump protector on—I don’t need to wear it when I’m in bed—and had the most comfortable night of sleep since my surgery. It was great. Then at breakfast I met another patient whose story is very similar to my own: persistent infection, Charcot foot, toe amputation, and below-knee amputation. He’s even diabetic as well. And I thought it was fascinating to meet someone in such good spirits going through the same thing as me who was thirty years older.
Except he isn’t. He’s only ten years older than I am. Crap I’m old.
I felt kind of run down after breakfast and catching up on news, so I returned to bed. Around 11am, a nurse came to grab me for lunch, at which point I realized I was hurting. Not in my stump—thankfully—but my hip and lower back. That plus a bout of nausea told me I didn’t want to eat lunch.
I’m feeling quite a bit better now, but it wasn’t pretty for a hot minute.
Something that amuses me rather than gives me the ick is flexing my knee. Like, watching the stump move is oddly fascinating. I wish I could explain why, but all I know is seems like it should be unsettling but isn’t.
Tomorrow is more physiotherapy. I’m sure it’ll be exhausting. Maybe I can leave my phone set to ring and make the whole gym laugh again.

The IAVC, or Inter Agency Visitor Center, which covered from Death Valley to Yosemite and all points between for permits, books, maps, info. (this is not off-topic,be patient!) and one day a French woman heading from Lone Pine down and around the Sierra to Yosemite's Fish Camp entrance comes to the counter. At one point I asked her where she was staying before heading in to the Park. She said the Yosemite hotel, in Fresno. (SEE!) I stepped back and said no. No you're not. Uh-uh. There was a titter in the room. I told her she was going to drive one more hour to Oakhurst and stay in the Super 8, and then she'd wake up and be IN THE FOREST, 30 minutes from the South Entrance of the Park, instead of in the American Hell of strip malls, endless pavement, litter, and sweltering heat, and where the businesses repeat every 8 blocks. There's more. But that's enough for here.
And why was my father raised there? Because his family moved there. The Portuguese side was from the Azores. We visited a few years ago. There must have been community in Fresno, and I'll bet land was affordable. That must be the reason because the Azores are semi-tropical, lush, and gorgeous. They are also volcanic, and have an uncanny resemblance to Hawaii, (but a lot colder). In fact, many left the Azores for Hawaii. But not my relatives. They moved to Fresno, and that had to be a shock!
