I love Clue the game. I’ve never fully understood the appeal of the film, although I agree the cast is fun. I grew up playing the 1960’s version from Parker Brothers, and the artwork was elegant. I’ve bought a couple backup copies of the game on eBay over the years and framed one of the game boards from the 60s for my mancave game room. There was even a 1980s VHS Clue game I used to watch when I was a kid.
Personally, the best cinematic version of something like Clue is The Last of Sheila, a 1973 film written by Stephen Sondheim and Anthony Perkins. Also a great ensemble cast with James Coburn, Dyan Cannon, James Mason, Joan Hackett, Raquel Welch, Ian McShane and Richard Benjamin. It’s well written, and requires (for me at least) more than one viewing to catch everything. It features a twisty plot that begins with the hit and run killing of Coburn’s wife, Sheila. Coburn has invited 6 friends aboard his yacht, “Sheila” on the 1 year anniversary of Sheila’s death, in the French Riviera. He’s created a game where each player is assigned a secret about themselves (one person is an informant, another a shoplifter, another a (gasp) homosexual, etc). Each night the yacht will stop at a different port, where the players will solve a puzzle that will reveal one person’s secret. But there is more to the game than meets the eye, and not everyone aboard wants to play. The movie features some nice locations and atmosphere, and some plot twists that require real thought. I’m a huge fan of the film. If you look closely you’ll see Cluedo, the original game, in Coburn’s yacht game room. He also has crime scene photos from the night his wife was killed turned into a puzzle, which I didn’t notice the first few times I watched the movie.
Love seeing the recent love for this movie with 40th anniversary celebrations/screenings & a documentary made during the pandemic (I believe it’s also on Paramount+, a wonderful addition to the film if you’re a long time fan!). I was obsessed with the movie growing up, it was always a classic for millennials/xennials and seems to have gained steam over time to become a true “cult classic”. I am lucky enough to have a personal relationship with the film as my aunt plays Miss Scarlett and my sister & I got to celebrate the movie at a 40th anniversary screening in SF in June with both her & the incomparable Tim Curry doing a Q&A. Growing up I was such a fan of his and getting to meet him at this event meant so much to me. To lose him so soon after was a real shock and I just feel so lucky to have gotten the chance to meet him. His performance is so underrated & I only hope that it gains further momentum from here despite the tragic loss. RIP 🙏🫶

Still reading that biography of Mussolini. By the 1930's, Mussolini had pushed out from his administration pretty much anyone who was competent, and he'd stopped even listening to advice. It was hard to tell how much of the bragging and lies that were part of his daily speech and the Fascist press were things he believed, but it seems that he did get to the point of believing his own hype. To make Italy great, he was set on achieving military victories and expanding the nation's colonial empire (nobody was telling him that at this point, colonies were costing more than they brought in). This led to a protracted war in Libya, and eventually an invasion of Ethiopia. In both cases, Mussolini declared victory, but the fighting went on for a prolonged period. Same in Spain, where Mussolini expected a quick victory, but his troops became tied down there. Mussolini had made himself head of all the armed forces, and was directing things, with poor results. For example, he sent his blackshirt militias abroad with the regular Army. They were useless, most having no kind of military training. Mussolini continually bragged of Italy having "8 million bayonets," and being second to no other nation militarily. This was far from the truth. For a long time he resisted an alliance with Germany, partly out of concern Hitler would do his Anschluss and threaten Italy's northeastern possessions, such as Trieste. But in the end he signed on to the Axis. He was contemptuous of the British and French, and believed they'd be no match for his Italian army. He didn't think much of the Americans, either. In this he was to be seriously mistaken.
