Catching up on Dark Passage a week later, hope that's okay, it's one of my very favorites.

Bacall was widowed at 32 in 1957, much like Jackie Kennedy, widowed at 34 in 1963. Both had two small children.

JFK died Nov 22, 1963, just before Caroline's sixth birthday on Nov 27 and John Jr's third birthday on Nov 25.

Bogart died on Jan 14, 1957, just after Stephen's eighth birthday on Jan 6 and seven months before Leslie's fifth birthday.

Leslie was named Leslie Howard Bogart after the actor Leslie Howard, who refused to appear in 'The Petrified Forest' unless the studio signed Bogart to play Duke Mantee.

Two Navy dolphins (yes, there are such things), trained to alert sailors to things underwater worth examining, tapped their bottle noses to the prow of a divers' vessel, to signal potential danger.

They had found a torpedo lost decades ago by the battleship Iowa during target practice off of Coronado.

The sailors ignored the first alert but when the dolphins persisted the divers went down and found

the old explosive device.

And in other "you have to be effing kidding me" news, Pig gets not even a slap on the wrist for victimizing woman (at least one). ACAB.

=========================

Prosecution of a former Napa County Sheriff's deputy for distributing nude pictures of a woman has been paused after he asserted mental health issues including sex addiction and posttraumatic stress disorder.

Visiting Napa County Superior Court Judge Julie M. Conger granted a request for mental health diversion to former deputy James Robert Fotherby, 44, of Napa, over the objections of prosecutors. The court placed Fotherby on mental health diversion for one year "which essentially pauses the criminal case," the Napa County District Attorney's Office said Friday. "If he successfully completes mental health diversion, the charges are dismissed by the court."

Fotherby was charged with invasion of privacy and distribution of intimate images, both misdemeanors, and a special allegation that would require a minimum of three years' probation upon conviction, prosecutors said.

SkeptiKC's avatar

Everything is fine. A few hours ago, however, the wind was picking up, smoke was overwhelming the house and I was getting pretty damned nervous. I was getting more than a little anxious recognizing that if the fires got much closer and endangered our property that I didn't have the means to put Ripper in his pet carrier, grab the folder containing various important legal documents, toss all of that and a small bag containing a change of clothes and my meds into the car and get the fuck out of here.

As long as the winds don't dial back up everything will remain just fine.

My thanks to all of you for giving a genuine damn. There is nothing else that I fear the way I am terrified of fire and this morning quite frankly scared the hell out of me.

imissthosesparks TYFYATTM's avatar

I wonder if he bothers to play anymore or if he just shows up at the end to collect his trophy with the other players at the ceremony all scratching their heads and asking each other, "Did you see him on the course?"

Daniel's avatar

There was a story in his first term about how he turned up one day and told the actual winner that it didn't count unless he could beat Trump at a nine-hole match. Trump cheated throughout and then took the trophy.

imissthosesparks TYFYATTM's avatar

He's spent his whole life in contempt of the rules and gotten away with it. I'm afraid he'll never face real justice.

EyeQueue's avatar

It is just mind-boggling how someone like him exists. How does he get away with being complely insulated from any and all fucking consequences for anything he's ever done?

It's disgusting. Unforgiveable. Mind-breaking and mind-boggling.

CripesAmighty's avatar

Money. Maybe it doesn't 'buy happiness', but at a certain level, it buys absolute impunity.

Daniel's avatar

He manages to monkey-bar his way between reasons not to be held to account. For most of his life, he was unaccountable because he had the money and the goons to intimidate anyone who wanted to do so. In terms of his sexual assaults and rapes, he got away with it because the system has always allowed men to get away with it- especially wealthy and connected men. Then he managed to luck into being a celebrity, and that gave him several more passes. Then he became a political candidate, and that gave him even more. To investigate a candidate was already evidence of bias, to prosecute one unthinkable. Then he became President, and doing anything there would not only risk hurting him, and making the doer look biased, but damage "the office" (formerly held by slave owners, slave owner-rapists, genocidaires and Richard Nixon) so nothing could be done. Then when he was out of office he once again became a candidate, so nothing could be done because of the risk of looking partisan, then he won again.

imissthosesparks TYFYATTM's avatar

It is mind-boggling. And that so many people have supported him, and still do, is equally mind-boggling. Without them we wouldn't have to suffer him, at least not as President.

EyeQueue's avatar

This. Yes. 100%. It's just mind-boggling he even has a single supporter left.

But still around 30% of voters support this shit.

Daniel's avatar

No, he never will. My hope is that he is granted some sort of Dickensian flash of awareness before he dies* that literally everyone hates him.
