When cable TV came to our town and we got HBO, that was my introduction to the concept of short films, which HBO used for filler to take up the time to the next film.
And "Bambi meets Godzilla" was the first one I saw. It created a lifelong love for shorts, especially ones with a dark or oddball sense of humor.
"De Düva" is another one that made a big impression on me at about that time.
The original "Gojira" was a horror movie in the pure sense of the word. Gojira itself was radioactive. It was fatal to even be near the monster. The "Americanized" version with Raymond Burr cut out most of the horror, like the doctor holding a Geiger counter to a little girl, as it clicks madly. Japanese people in the 50s knew what that meant. The doctor and a nurse look at each other, their faces showing the girl is going to die a horrible death. Or the scene where a mother desperately tries to shield her children from the terror all around them, telling her kids that they will soon be reunited with father.
Wisconsin Republicans are asking voters to take away the governor’s power to unilaterally spend federal money, a reaction to the billions of dollars that flowed into the state during the COVID-19 pandemic...Democratic Gov. Tony Evers was free to spend most of that money as he pleased, directing most of it toward small businesses and economic development, angering Republicans who argued the Legislature should have oversight.
That’s what would happen under a pair of related constitutional amendments up for voter approval in the Aug. 13 primary election. The changes would apply to Evers and all future governors and cover any federal money to the state that comes without specific spending requirements, often in response to disasters or other emergencies..."
We need moar tax cuts! THAT is how that money should be spent.
My own idiot governor, Mark Sanford told Obama that he would only accept the $700 million Obama was going to provide to upgrade schools and invest in infrastructure to get people working again, if he could use it to pay off the massive deficits that Mark Sanford had run up with tax cuts. Obama told him to "fuck off" and Sanford ultimately accepted the money.
See Kansas under Sam Brownback! He tried out every dumb idea that Republicans had ever had, and ended up with massive debts and corporations fleeing the state, while the schools were collapsing.
I am watching a live-streamed tennis match from Paris. What gets to me is that in just about every crowd shout, the crowd member on camera is staring at their phone.
I think we're doing Wonkette's version of summer session, where we don't get as many posts. I think the writers all went to the RNC and may still be recuperating from the hardcore partying they did with the weirdos of the GQP.
We walked around Comic Con yesterday. Didn't have badges, but there's lots to see outside the convention center. Wicked lines to get into the Hulu, Fx and NBC events but all were free carnivals deals.
The "IMDBoat" was my favorite name, but adult swim had a pirate theme that looked fun.
I feel like it's basically San Diego's version of Mardi Gras, but with cosplay costumes
We saw a guy dressed as Rick from the Rick&Morty cartoon, and he made a nearby toddler cry (big cartoon foam head). Maybe kinda in character for Rick?
My Apple device battery is literally playing games on me, swinging from 0% to 100% to 30%, with catastrophic shutoffs, so I have to give up subsnacks for my real life problems now. Uggh, fuck!
a 39' sailboat barely qualifies as a yacht, while there is no official length standard 40' is sort of accepted as when boats become yachts, and $128k buys a lot of sailboat. Is your contention that they overvalued the vessel?
I have no idea if the sailboat was overvalued or didn't deserve the 'yacht' classification - I just thought it was funny that they gave its value to +- $100. It's pure innumeracy.

Thank you!
Hadn't seen 'Bambi vs. Godzilla' in years.

I posted in the wrong thread.
Bobcat Goldthwait is still my favorite gojira. https://youtu.be/JfVCZyeVfbo?si=xWPcekbJ2jjDMwW6
Was that Bob Wilkins as the cigar thrower?
That is the most beautiful thing that I have ever seen.

That Bambi Vs Godzilla cartoon used to be a regular pre-show clip at the UC Theater in Berkeley's live Rocky Horror show.
God damn, whoever came up with this "2025 project" is PURE... FUCKING... EEVIIL!!
I will be interesting who will.be named "dungeon master"...
Ok, I get you.
We just need to find Eric's dad's phylactery.

Redumlican led states are laboratories for venal shortsighted fuckery...

New thread is up!
But I like this one!

I also love when the Wonkers...err "workers"...take over the means of production, and just go totally rogue producing our own content.
I was wondering!

"Didn't have badges"
I doubt you needed stinking badges.

Orcas attack!
https://www.joemygod.com/2024/07/killer-whales-attack-and-sink-yacht-in-mediterranean/
It's the whale equivalent of "Get off my lawn!"
I love how the story says the yacht was worth "$128,600".
Obviously some reporter ran a currency converter and transcribed, like, all the digits.

Gotcha!
I'm team orca.
Oh dear. I love yacht attacking orcas. I also love humpback whales, who hate orcas.
"Yacht"?
I think usually they're playing a whale game, but these folks seem kinda pissed!
Hey orcas why you gotta beat up on smallish sailing vessels. The major dicks are the ones in the big motorized yachts.
(Oh I guess those are harder to sink though.)
Yeah, $128,000 is not much of a yacht
you might be surprised
I'm still Team Humpback
That was a real moby dick move
Wow, sunk it?
It’s almost like they were trained by the US military
You just knew that, when the Navy started training seals, it was only a matter of time before they got to orcas.
Isn't that the premise of "Day of the Dolphin?"
One of the worst sequels ever, but Edward Fox was still fucking brilliant in it.
It's not really his fault he couldn't swim.
There is not a movie called "Day of the Tarantula" , is there?
They tried to make one, but the cast and crew had all passed away before the end of week 1 on set.
