I would obsessively watch this movie as a kid whenever it came on the TeeVee. Katharine Hepburn's treatment of Bogart from beginning to end is legendary.
So now I am thinking that the government shut down Tiktok not because of some vague security issues, but because they could not tolerate the infiltration of socialist Chinese influence. It would start to make people think that we aren't as free as we thought we were, in comparison to the relative prosperity and well-being of the Chinese people, not to mention the lack of fear of guns, which are only allowed in the well regulated militia.
Nope it's simpler and more petty than that. Tik Tok fans trolled Trump once by snapping up all the seats to one of his failed rallies. He vowed to have them shut down. His minions went to work. It was too late to stop them, now he has to undo it or face the wrath of Gen Z.
OT: I know this is a quiescent thread now, and the new post is up, but this is an OT noncomment that I want to put somewhere. I'm such a wanty one.
I'm watching "Roma" as part of my Spanish language comprehension studies. It's a long movie. At about the 1:40 mark (that's one hour and forty minutes) there's a series of scenes in a hospital that are some of the saddest things I've seen in a while.
Israel’s military says the three hostages are now in Israeli territory.
“A short while ago, accompanied by IDF and ISA forces, the released hostages crossed the border into Israeli territory,” the IDF said.
“The released hostages are currently on their way to an initial reception point in southern Israel, where they will undergo an initial medical assessment.”
Donald Trump and MAGA are very clear on who does not deserve citizenship. Trump said immigrants (except the white ones) were “poisoning the blood of our country.” He has consistently posited that other countries are “not sending their best” people. Theo Wold of the Claremont Institute has called for “assimilation” and “Americanization.” He calls for a “closed border” to benefit the working class.
States, sensing momentum now that mass deportations are finally within reach, also have rafts of proposed legislation and policies, rolled out by pioneering Republican politicians. A Mississippi district attorney proposed “bounty hunters” for immigrants, and Indiana and Florida want to ban undocumented children from public schools.
Except that it’s also Maura Healey, the Democratic governor of Massachusetts, who wants to limit the number of immigrants in the shelter system. It’s Kathy Hochul, the Democratic governor of New York who wants to put a cop on every subway car.
Far from resisting, Democrats seem determined to facilitate “mass deportation.” And while the propaganda may be splashier than the results, we should all be concerned about condemning more people to banishment and punishment.
It's not that those white Americans think they're above the work so much as citizenship protects them from having to be so badly exploited – by the threat of deportation, which allows bad people to keep the wages so low and the conditions so awful.
Except that no matter what, there wasn't enough TIME to change a law that was, up until last week, in litigation. I agree with her, but placing the blame for a Trump law on the Democrats is a bit disingenuous.
The rest of the post is spot on ... Tik-Tok became a good platform for LGBQT voices, and losing that is hard. Rebuilding communities like that isn't easy. It's blaming it on the Democrats in Congress to not roll back the law that bothers me.
People that age don't understand the importance of privacy or national security. The are shocked by the concept of deepfakes and the threats that they pose. Heck, many of them still live with their parents.
My guess is that they will be learning a lot about both of those issues in the next few years.
Today we shall have shabu shabu (Japanese hot pot) for Ciaobella Jr’s last dinner at home before he blasts off to Bawlmer tomorrow morning for the spring semester.
An old evil piece of shit taking over everything? Trade wars and taxation battles? Heavily armed types running around threatening violence if they do not get their way? Well meaning politicians who would rather stick to norms, custom, and good manners than call out the rising threat until it's too late? Ignoring the guy trying to warn you all about the shit about to go down for "reasons"?
Yep, Star Wars :The Phantom Menace seems like the perfect movie for the last day of good government and relative normalcy.
This is yet another way for him to launder illegal donations. It's not a serious investment by any stretch of the imagination. By themselves they're almost worthless. Collecting Hummel figurines would be far more profitable.
Hours before the platform was supposed to shut down, the ownership pulled the plug themselves with a message now popping up that saysd, in part: "Sorry, TikTok isn’t available right now,” before adding, “We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office. Please stay tuned!”
President-elect Trump returned the message in kind on Truth Socials, simply writing: "SAVE TIKTOK!"

LOL.
What if, in a matter of hours, you were going to be in a position to get the law repealed?
The next movie is 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐲.

Thank you for one more picture of Bear. I'm going to miss him.

I hate to think that this, of all the million possibilities/eventualities, is what makes Gen Z furious with Trump.

A friend of mine in Kern County said ICE is already rounding up ag workers. Talk about obeying in advance!
White Americans won't do the jobs that the undocumented do. Period.
So it's just BS about how the border policies and deportation will "benefit the working class."
It's not that those white Americans think they're above the work so much as citizenship protects them from having to be so badly exploited – by the threat of deportation, which allows bad people to keep the wages so low and the conditions so awful.
40-week, health insurance and a living wage and maybe some Americans would be willing to take those jobs.
THIS, TIMES A MILLION!!!!
This is by Jessica Pishko, who is doing an event today. I posted it a few hours ago, but it bears repeating: https://www.wonkette.com/p/wonkette-movie-night-the-african/comment/87099260
I read that earlier. Thanks for the repost.
I figured by now there may be people here who were not earlier.
I keep hearing rumors that there exists people who are not on yr Wonkette AT ALL TIMES. I don't believe this yet...

Nice delusion ya got there, Erin.
I think what Erin is saying is highly doubtful.

Just to prove to myself that I can still post pics here. Another pic of a shadowbox I did last year. "Winter Dreams of Spring"https://substack.com/profile/157182336-rosy-red-ass/note/c-87119197?utm_source=notes-share-action&r=2lkyo0
There was a Cornell show at the National Gallery here back in aught six. Man, was it awesome to see his work in person.
Another lovely piece.
I'm really loving the trees.
I do a lot of trees. I went to UCSC. So many gorgeous trees.
Yes, there certainly are there. XD
Its beautiful!
Thanks again Jen!!!!!
Gorgeous!

Hey MAGAs: The dice are loaded. The cards are marked. And speaking of marks, tag you're it.
Isn't there any possibility that this will blow up in his face?
Everything he touches turns to shit.
And yet, he thrives.

The mendacious malcontents will get EXACTLY what they deserve.
THEN I intend to give them a swift KICK for good measure.
Zero sympathy. Worse than that, this makes me happy.

Dumbasses.
The photo of Bernie Sanders with the mask and big mittens at Biden's inauguration still cracks me up.
I have a magnet made of that photo on my fridge to remind me of better times.
Those mittens from the Vermont Mitten Co. are freakin' awesome. And we'll need them this week.
The second date is in the books and sealed with a kiss.
I had forgotten how good building a new relationship can feel.
Congrats!
Oh shit! That's awesome!
So jealous.
Nice!

Old, weak, dumbass.
Like, he was the one who was originally gung ho to ban the fucking thing...
That was before he got a megadonor that owns a piece of it.
I consider this action censorship.
